Lets talk air guns.

I was told they now have air guns for hunting. So I went on line to read up on them. I see recoil is mentioned quite often. What are they talking when they say recoil? Like a shot Gun? Like a 30-06?, Like a 22? What makes the recoil? Which air gun to buy? They have different kinds; simple cock & shoot, co2 powered, The "Break barrel" cocking, the variable pump, and the high pressure ones filled from scuba tank/special pump(called CPC guns, or something like that). I"m interested in the "Break Barrel, and the one filled from scuba tank. Sure not the air guns of yester years.

The recoil is different than on a rifle or shotgun. It comes from the spring. It's so different that scope makers have had to design scopes just for air rifles.

I'm not big into them, but the higher powered jobs are better killers than the old Red Ryder. BUT, a lot of that depends on the pellet style and caliber. Read up a bit before sinking money into them. You get what you pay for.

My boy has a .177 pellet single shot rifle, shoots 1250 ft/s. Pull a lever to cock. It kicks, needs special scope, will dent a quarter. Very accurate too.

I have a break barrel .177 It easily and accurately
kills a squirrel at about 30 yds. For that gun there isn't much recoil on the butt stock, but the spring in that gun sure does make that barrel jump especially if you're resting the barrel on a hard surface to keep it steady. I keep a good grip on the forearm of the gun at it works just fine. Sure beats my old pump pellet gun.

I have a Ruger air magnum break barrel 177. Shoots very accurate but does have some recoil. Takes 42 lbs force to cock it and will give your arm a workout if you shoot it very much. Hate to say it but it is made in china. Didn"t know that when I bought it. Check out www.airgundepot.com They have several brands. Amazon has it for 156.00 and free shipping now. Also comes with scope. DH

Well as for the recoil can not say if you can compare it to a shotgun but. For every reaction there is an opposite and equal reaction so when you pull the trigger you release that high pressure air so you get a recoil.
As for what guns well here in Missouri you can legally hunt deer with an air rifle that is charged by an external source of air and is 40 cal or larger.

Old who makes a .40 cal. air rifle ? I have access to list of air rifle manufactures (foreign and domestic) and no body list a .40 cal. or larger air rifle for sale.

I have no idea who makes one that big I just know what the Hunting regs say and that is in the book they print out each year for deer hunting. So all I am doing is passing on what the MO law is about deer hunting and an air gun

Thanks for the site. I watched several of them on there.None were made by Crossman but by Sam Yang. Nice looking rifles and about the same price as a cartrige load rifle. It said you get up to 16 shoots from 1 load. The only trouble with site was Bloombergs ant-gun vote kept poping up.

I"ve got a .177 Gamo Whisper with scope for garden protection in city- some people just don"t appreciate shotguns keeping racoons out of tomato patch. Had a .22 pump up- "crossman/Benjamin? - some years back that did fair job on rabbits in carrots, last seen in sisters hands for use by niece. 5mm Sheridan is old standard- got one for a kid when I had dealers license, parents permission. kid came back a month later and said mother was using it a lot, was getting better than he was and the scout unit marksmanship training was using something else so he had to get the single shot break model for them- ordered him a BSA dropshipped. BSA and couple others had break barrel .22 and .25 listed, was note that not allowed in some areas- like Chicago- because the large bore and energy levels got them classed as "firearms". Korean made airguns from one supplier noted a .32 bore both rifled and smooth bore available that would take OO buck- the local Korean laws made them most practical legal pest controler. Brazil laws on firearms kind of tight on pistols- but the loophole for some city residents was a CO2 pellet pistol with a single discharge valve setting and solid pellet from .22 long rifle instead of the hollowbased pellet-600 to 700 fps with 32 or 40 grain bullet- that gave homeowner and shopkeepers the legal to use equivalent to a .22 Derringer. Rifleman has a small add for a compressed air flask airifle with a little squirrel saying he"s trying to protect his nuts- it notes legal for small game and deer some states, a .45 or 50 caliber. Lewis and Clark had a about .44 caliber air rifle- air flask type- that impressed indians because it didn"t smock and was about as quiet as a bow and arrow. Austrian snipers about that time used something similar to pick off French officers- the French had a policy of anybody captured with the air rifle to be hung so the air rifle users apparently had harvested a few officers. Considering the way the nnalert have been pushing restrictive laws- might need to get a couple just to keep eye and trigger finger in practice. RN

Is Beeman still in business? I have a 25 caliber, when you shoot the hollow point, it expands to about 40 Cal. Great on groundhogs, at close range!

pyramid air sells all kinds, have videos of tests, etc, good gun will run $275 and up, get into german rifles 350 and up....

Lewis and Clark had one on their expedition, was 46 caliber and had a velocity similar to a 45 ACP. They demonstrated it to the Indians and they were impressed. It could fire about 20 shots on a charge and did not smoke, they had never seen anything like it. It took about 1500 pumps to fully charge the reservoir.

Since the recoil is high and reversed make sure you get a good scope base the oem base on my rifle caused the scope to slip on rifle receiver. the one I have now has 5 screws holding it in place IT WORKS!
I use .177 hollow points about 9grs. Was shooting at my 100yd bullet stop and it does drop but not as much as expected and would hold about 6" group but what really surprised me was that the pellet went into the wood 3/16 "

Only one. Sheridan Blue Streak 5mm. Kill a possumd real dead at 50 feet.
Pigeons crushed with two pumps, Cottontails 5 pumps.
Garage 25 foot offhand target shoots for money, 2 pumps. We cover a 2'x2' 1/2 inch plywood with locker
paper. Draw a 1/2 dot with black majic marker in all four corners. Then 4-5 of us all toss a buck in a dish. Closest to one dot wins the money. Then on to next dot. Usually takes a shot touching the dot to win. Open sights.

(quoted from post at 11:11:41 04/26/13) Old who makes a .40 cal. air rifle ?
Sam Yang does. Three calibers in three models:
Recluse - .357 caliber 983 fps @ 154 ft/lbs
Big Bore 44 - .45 caliber 730 fps @ 237 ft/lbs
Dragon Claw-.50 caliber 679 fps @ 230 ft/lbs

You use a hand pump to take them to 3000 psi.

They're illegal in the birth state of Wyatt Earp (Illinois)

The spring type guns kick more than the pump up types such as the Sheridan or old Benjamins.

Someone asked about Beeman. I bought one last year that is a one pump breakover with two barrels: 177 and 22. It claims 1150 fps. My grandson and I have been killing tin can lids at about 50 feet with it. Both calibers go through the lids. I haven't tried it on any varmints yet. It cost $130 and has a nice fold up case and a 4X scope. It does give the shoulder a workout after about 20 shots.

I nice gun for the money, built really heavy and seems to be durable.
