Build me a tool box

I was given a project @ work the other day. I was asked to take a 20" Craftsman tool box & stock it full of tools that can be used for simple fixes on automotive. I got on my list screw drivers, wrenches (1/4" - 1" & 8mm- 19mm"), Channel lock pliers, Side cutters, neddle nose pliers, lineman pliers, & adjustable wrench. I can't forget duck tape. any other ideas?

need to remember things like measuring devices, and a simple volt-ohmmeter. a roll of good electrical tape and maybe some jb weld.

3/8 drive allen wrenches or hex keys. Torx is mentioned. Invisible glove hand coating. Make sure your metric set has 18 mm in it.

If your doing automotive stuff nowdays then you definately need the torx bits. The best thing I have found to keep in a 'general repair' type box is one of the sets that has multiple bits that fit a 1/4 inch hex handle. Find a set, or if need be two sets, to insure that you have both the torx, allen, straight and phillips, and hex bits. Add in a 6 in one screwdriver, a 1/4 drive rachet, a pair of pliers (I like to just use vice grips because of their verstility, especially one with the wire cutter part at the joint), a 6 and 10 inch adjustable wrench, and you can do many simple repairs. On top of that a pair of wire cutters, a roll of Super 33 electrical tape, a few zip ties, a small roll of like 150 grit emery cloth, and an inexpensive electrical meter (on top of, or in place of the test light as it will do the lights job and then some). Then throw in a few different guage wires at least 36" long, and a handful of crimp ends (but splices, ring terminals, spade terminals, etc)along with a crimp tool. With these simple tools there won't be many minor repairs you can't handle.
Bit sets

Put a cell phone in it with the name of a good repair shop. LoL Sorry couldn't resist. Are you new to mechanics? Maybe someone at work could give you an idea? A socket set and a basic multimeter would be good to have.

i think that was an april fools joke!
just what is a simple fix on todays auto's?
you need specialty tools. maybe keep the duct tape.

Put a 6' double stacked box on each side of that 20" box and fill them full of every tool you can imagine and you won't have to borrow many to change a water pump or a set of plugs on most of the new vehicles.....

1/4" drive socket set with Torx bits. Metric and standard allen wrenches. Magnet with telescoping handle. Stiff-blade putty knife for scraping gaskets and removing crud. Toothbrush-sized wire brush. Small roll of emery cloth. Utility knife.

c"mon guys...... 6 beers an ice pack and a cell phone.

1- open box
2- take out beer and cell phone
3- close box and sit on it
4- open beer and call someone!

I got one that is amazing one side says 10 " and works on standard and flip it over and it is in Milimeters and works on metric. One of my favorite adjustables.

This made me smile because I've interviewed guys applying for a mechanic's job who had less. Had one "master t.ech" applicant show up on day one with his tools in a drywall bucket

Don't know how you'd get by these days without a set of those fuel/AC line connector tools, and the tool/specialty pliers used on Weather Pack electrical connectors.

Or a serpentine belt tensioner tool.

Or a multimeter.

And that's just for starting out to do simple tune-up and maintenance.

Digital or dial caliper. Notebook and ball point pen. TWO 15mm wrenches (most metric sets do not have 15mm size). 1 1/16 and 1 1/8 inch wrenches. Package of fuses. Penetrating oil. Spray starting fluid. Silicone grease. Tape measure. Band Aids. Waterless hand cleaner. Safety glasses. Gloves.
