Chainsaw jug replace

Anyone ever changed out the jug and piston in a chainsaw? I got some bad gas that had some water in it and it scored and froze up the piston. Dealer wanted way too much to repair and suggested I buy a aftermarket jug and piston and do it myself. See that they have replacement jugs and pistons on ebay (Husq 350 saw). Is it just swapping parts or is there more to it?

Not too bad of a job. If it has a plastic clamp on intake boot that will need changed. Personally it's one of my favorite saws----lots of them out there that have blown up due to intake leaks and muffler vibrating loose which melts the case. If you do keep it be certain to correct the intake and muffler flaws. If you want to sell it as it is I'd be interested.

I replaced a jug on a husqvarna once. I did not notice that I
dropped a wrist pin retaining clip down into the crank case. It
ran like a top until that pin started circulating....

Seems to me there are some upgrades available should
you desire to do so? Like 346XP type parts? I may be
off base as I only own one Husky that being a 346
XP.

get a service manual or read the dealers manual if he will let you (he should). I swapped one for a friend. about a 15 minute job.

On any vertical jug saw it's basically just pulling off the carb and intake parts and exhaust and unbolting the jug from the crankcase, pull wrist pin and replace the piston, then put it all back together. Cleaning stuff up and putting the parts you missed back on usually takes longer than actually doing the work.

I am confused, as usual. Are we talking about the cylinder that the piston is in or is the fuel tank the subject?

It's the head/cylinder (jug) and piston.

The head and cylinder are typically one-piece on 2-stroke engines, they look like old time whiskey jugs.

Any one have a preferred aftermarket source? Preferred ebay seller? Those OEM Husq parts are gold plated. $230 for the kit. Aftermarket on ebay runs from $30 (HongKong) to $90 with lots of choices in between. Would prefer to go to a USA source that is known to sell good aftermarket kits...not trying to save the last buck.

Just want a good kit for less than $100. OEM is $20 cheaper that what I bought the saw for...

Go to Balieys. And look in the Chainsaws section on Aboristsite.com or ForestryForum.com.

Baileys only shows OEM parts for the Husq 350 model. Lots of other models have aftermarket, but not that one...

Still looking...

Aftermarket is a crap shot. Try to clean your old cyl with fine sandpaper and muratic acid. The acid will help eat the aluminum and not the nikasil coating. If it'll clean up then buy a Meteor or Episian piston. If your saw has a 45mm dished piston replace it with a flat top piston for more power.
