Question for ASE Guy/building engine

Dodge grain truck with 360. Mechanic says he can bore it to 407 with good results. What do you think? I'm doubtful.

I'm sorry I don't know. We have built several small block Dodge engines that were overbored just to clean the up the cylinders.

We don't know the year or the series of engine so all we can do is guess the answer from our end.

That being said, if it is an "LA" block you will only get that big with a stroker crank and plan on spending a pile of cash.

If it is the 360 that I have read long ago that shared parts with the big blocks then you might be able to do that. I don't know. Best bet may be finding a used engine that just runs but spend some money if you want, we all have!

I don't know if Dodge ever put the LA series 360 in a medium truck. I know there was a 361 cid version of the B series in a lot of them. (I drove a D600 for a few years that had the 361) The B series had the dist. at the front of the engine, the LA was at the rear. I know the 361 was tough, reliable and a pretty good "tugger".

Thanks guys for the info. I am not going to all that for a work truck. Got a lot to do and only so much to do with. Thanks.

If it's a 361 big block, then a 361, 383 and 400 B block or a 413, 426 and 440 RB block would also have the same mountings. Any 413, 440 motor home engines available? They may be setup for automatic transmissions though.

If you post the bore and stroke I can tell you how much of a cut that will be.Some engines are " known" for more meat in the walls than others . If you don't sonic test you can end up with a thin spot especially if there was any core shift during casting. Or worst case you can bore right throught the cylinder. By known to have thick walls I mean communicate with others that have done that without problems. There is still a risk but at least you know if someone else got away with it. Most shops that do not sonic test wall thickness don't have the equipment and will tell you anything is okay because they don't want to lose you as a customer.

If you do go that far oversize it will most likely be the last top end job on that engine. Unless it was for racing your best bet is to go with what cleans up the bore [hopefully plus .010"] Leaving meat for future rebuilds.

With the right cam and a long-runner intake, you can really wake up that 360 as a truck engine. A 4 inch stroke with a stock 360 bore comes out to 402 cubic inches, with a 340 bore (which is bigger than the 360's) yields 408 inches.

The new Hemi bolts in place of the earlier LA/Magnum engines, and Indy Cylinder Head is pushing them out to 440 inches.

For better bang-for-the-buck, you can swap a set of Magnum heads onto the pre-magnum block. People say it can't be done without a bunch of machining, but all it takes is a magnum-specific intake and magnum lifters and pushrods. They oil the top end through the pushrod like a Chevy, instead of the rocker pedestals.
