Long story short I was dumb and didn't check if the gas was mixed and I ruined the piston and cylinder on my saw. I'm looking for any ideas on what i should do. Should I buy a new cylinder, rings and piston from Stihl, which are over $325 or should i look for a good used set or should I look at an aftermarket set. Has anyone tried an aftermarket set? I'm leaning towards new Stihl ones.

either used or aftermarket are okay. Companies that make aftermarket sets are usually the companies who made it for Original Equipment Manufacturer(OEM). Usually independent shops or maybe even Stihl dealer may get them. Ron's Saw Shop in So. Dakota is a reliable source of used & aftermarket parts. Search the 'net for him.

We live about 20 miles north of House Trucking, which is a very
good Stihl dealer. There are others closer but they are nowhere
near the knowledge level. When I needed a new piston and cylinder
in a 440 they recommended an aftermarket set and I have been
happy with it. It does not have a compression release but that is
okay, it is not really necessary. It was about 1/3 the price of Stihl
parts.

You might want to try and save the cyl with fine sandpaper and muratic acid. The aluminum from the piston fuses to the cyl wall. I've had some pretty nasty cyls brought back to life. If you can save the cyl look for a Meteor or Episian piston they're every bit as good as Stihl.

You can buy an aftermarket big bore kit from baileys-
online.com. Great company to do business with. The local saw
shop has installed a lot of these kits with good results. They
give a little more bore for a little more power.Just another
option for you to look into. Hope this helps Chris

Bailey's is a first class outfit. They stand behind their products. I've used a few of the NWP kits and their quality has improved quite a bit. If you live east of the Miss R. you might try Northwoodsaw. They offer a Meteor kit for $140 plus shipping and you'll have it quicker. Many would argue the Meteor quality is better.

Thanks for the info guys! Might try the muradic acid trick. Looks like Baileys is a pretty good site to know. Looks like after last weeks ice and snow storm, I'm gonna really need my saw and its gonna get a work out!
