I"m looking at buying an oiless air compressor but I have no experience with one. Anyone have an opinion or experience with these?

They are terribly loud , you can't talk over the noise they make . Do you have an out building you can put it in ? At least a shed or lean to on your shop ?

Have you ever wondered what that annoying buzzing noise comming from your neighbours place five miles away was?
If you are considering buying one, go to a store and ask them to plug one in for you.

Well....if you're only gonna use it to top off a bike tire or blow the dust out of your PC once in a while, an oiless will be OK.

But the noise will drive you crazy. Also oiless compressors are notorious for their short lives.

I have a crafstman oil less that works well for what it is yes it is a loud unit but for around the house it is fine it inflates tires and will run an impact or air chisel and a die grinder mine is a 25 or 30 gallon tank vertical style hope that helps some

Dont even think of buying one. There are plenty of small piston type compressors for less than 100.00.

If you are looking for oilless specifically for whatever reason, there are good ones but you won't find them in Sears. Consumer grade oilless are noisy, throwaway compressors.

Check out the DBA rating, (decibels A rated three feet from the source of the noise). OSHA says that any rating of 86 DBA and higher causes harm and damage to a persons ears.

You can probably find a good used oiless air compressor for 1/4 the price of a new one. Regular air compressors cost more new, but they hold their value much better.

I have had one oiless air compressor for about 20 years that I first used for some painting then I relegated it to occasional use in the home garage. It works well but I won't buy another one. It is too noisey for shop use, well over 100 Decibles. It has a 60 Hz buzz. It's not too bad for outside use, but for me it's too loud for inside a building. I often start it and then leave the garage until it finishes running.

ITT (now Thomas) manufactures oilless compressors, they are very good but expensive. I buy used ones when I find them. The piston/rods are on eccentrics that are pressed onto the motor shaft therefore they are 1800 rpm units.

I'll never buy another oiless again, junk, noisy, pull lots of amps and won't last. The old saying, you get what you pay for.

another case of "you get what you paid for".

If you're looking for a small compressor - check out the makitas. In my opinion they're a great compressor.

Percentage wise they're probably a lot more than any typical oiless - but you're talking relatively small dollar amounts to begin with - so an extra 50 -100 dollars you'll get a solid, quiet compressor that's going to last.
