Foam in air compressor oil

Hi All.

I bought this about 3 years ago.
Link... http://www.external_link/en/store/ingersoll-randreg%3B-5hp-air-compressor-80-gal

It hasn"t run for a month or more. Checked oil, looks fine. Started up, ran fine, auto shut down at proper PSI. I noticed the oil level eye sight has foam. I figured condensation, changed oil to proper level. Same thing. Manual has nothing.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks....don t. ....

What are you using for oil? Detergent engine oil will foam. That's why the early hydraulics in farm tractors called for non-detergent oil.

As Deans says use an oil made just for a compressor and you will have fewer problems like that. Most any good auto parts store will have it on hand

Just out of curiosity , this was the first time you saw it foaming , even with the factory oil in it ? It doesn't seem unreasonable it to have a bit of foam in it after shutown. Everything in there would be splash lubricated , it shouldn't hurt anything....

I use the recommend IR "all-season" oil. It's even got their name on it(grin). I don't think it's synthetic, breaker blows when extremely cold. I change the oil each spring, never have seen it foam before.

I had that problem with hard starting when really cold with the original oil that came with the compressor. A machinist friend of mine told me to use mobil one. Changed to Mobil one and it starts easy in winter and doesn't foam.

Same here, changed all compressors to Mobil 1 grade 5W-30 motor oil in Quincy shop compressor and several other portable compressors. No foam, oil still looks new at annual change and they start e4ffortlessly at -30 in unheated shop.

Bought a Champion Compressor from TP tools. I have had good luck with it for 5 years. Decided to change the oil and didn't like the price and shipping for Champ Lube oil from TP, so I bought compressor oil from NAPA. Used it all last summer with no problems. When it got cold the compressor would not start in an unheated shop at 25 degrees inside temp. Ordered the Champ lube oil from TP (not synthetic), No problems the rest of the winter and it was colder than when I had the NAPA oil in it.
