barn find 63 galaxie convert w/352 motor has a cracked block-- will a 352 from a pickup directly bolt in? found one for $150... or I have access to a 302 w/aod tranny. kinda want to keep this all black car original- no real need for speed just a cruiser. thanks in advance

The 352 is the same motor . The 302 could be made to fit with different motor and possible tranny mounts. A 360 or a 390 would fit as well. Just took a 352 out of a 65 Galaxie and converted to a 351 W. took a lot of changes but should be worth it in the end.

Were is the crack,,, I just built a 390 (same engine you have I think the big difference is the crank) the block was cracked in the bell housing area,,, I had it pin stitched seams to be working out just find...

The only big block Ford that's worth a damm is a 460... I am rite sure the pick up engine will be a direct fit... Ask here

Too bad there are no good junkyards anymore. If you found an old Thunderbird 352 and had a magnet you could check if it was a factory aluminum intake manifold. They were painted blue like the motors but they were out there.Good strong motors.

Main part of engine is the same. Oil pan & exhaust manifolds may be different. Position of alternator/power seering pump may be different. Accessory pulleys may also be different. Make sure pilot hole in crankshaft for torque converter is the same size.

Do lots of research!!!!! In 1964 ford moved the motor mount bosses. Everything will bolt but the motor mounts. You will need a pre-64 block

(quoted from post at 06:06:37 03/27/13) Don't the 302/351W and 352/360/390 have totally different transmission bolt pattersn?

I believe so. 352/360/390 are all the same but will not interchange with the 302/351.

Just my opinion, but while the 352 is a good ol' workhorse for a truck, I'd much rather have the 390 in a car.

We had 390's in our company cars in the late 60's; they were a much better engine than anything else we had in the fleet at that time. It would move a 4-door hardtop down the interstate all day at 100 mph - but it only got 10mpg at that speed.

My brother had a '69 Ford with a 390. Never had to do any repairs on the engine; it had 360,000 miles on it when he quit running it.

I had a 63 Mercury that I bought used with the 390 engine. I paid $1600.00 for it with 10k miles. One of my co-workers had traded it. It was a good road car. I drove it to FL in 1967. It cruised with ease at 70mph on those Interstate
Hwys.

In 1976 we bought a 1972 Ford 2-dr hardtop with the 429 engine and it was one of the best cars we owned. In 1988 we bought a 1980 Cadillac Seville. The Ford was a better car. In 1985 we bought a 1981 Mercury Cougar that my wife's sister bought new. When it had 15k miles on it her husband told her to get rid of it. We still have that Cougar. It has the 302 engine and I haul heavy loads in it between 500 to 600 pounds.
The 302 engine handles it with ease even on the hills. It only has 56K miles on it now. I did put new struts and shocks in it 1994 and I just replaced them again. I still had the original receipt and none of the local auto parts store would replace them. I called Monroe and told me to fax a copy of the old receipt to them and 10 days later I got the new parts. Hal
PS: I've already installed the rear shocks will do the struts when it gets warmer.

You can't get rid of your '81 Cougar. I've got a '71 Cougar and it'll be the last car I part with.

352 from a pickup will fit without problems. You may need to use the car exhaust manifolds, possibly the oil pan and oil pickup tube from the car.

A friend of mine had a 67 or 68 F100 with a 352. When the 352 got tired, they transplanted a 390 2 barrel from a 69 LTD SW. The F100 felt like it had about twice as much power and got about 3 mpg better mileage.

I suspect that the truck 352 had a fairly different camshaft than the otherwise very similar car engine. And some 352"s had mechanical lifters. The truck 352 would probably work, but I bet there are usable or rebuildable 390"s out there that would work better. You would need to change a BUNCH of stuff to make a small block work, so I would stick with an FE. Good luck!

I'm not planning to get rid of it. It comes in handy when I need it. I could put antique tags on, but here in MD you're limited to driving it.

on, if you get a chance, I left a question for you on the alternator question a day or two back (Farmall forum, Single wire alt update, March 23).

motor mounts are different. the one you have is a 2 bolt block(where the mount bolt to the block) and the 65 and newer were 3 bolt. i don't know if they made an adaptor mount. I dirt track raced a 63 ford, in 1975; so i learned alot!

Sorry I did not get back to that thread, it's on page 10 now.

My answer would be.
"I would say you are correct. The only electrical connection between stator voltage and the "1 wire" regulator is through the diode trio."

hanks, Jon.

Are you sure its a 352? If you are going by the 352 stamped on the block , they all have 352 on the front of the block so it could be any of the FE series motors
