Plasma cutters

I am thinking about purchasing a plasma cutter.
I know they cut mild steel, can they cut stainless, aluminum, cast iron?
Any brand to stay away from?

Thanks for any info

They will cut most anything conductive, including your fingers. ONE thing to look for is price of consumables and local availability of consumables.

Here are some cut outs I made on aluminum with my Hypertherm 1250.

They'll cut just about anything that conducts electricity even if it's painted. How thick of material do you want to cut? Buy a name brand so parts will be available down the road. Hypertherm and Thermal Dynamics make good machines but newer Millers would be OK too if you got a good deal. Are you looking for new or used plasma?

I like the Hypertherm unit that I bought. I would say, buy the biggest unit that your breaker will handle, you WILL find something big to cut!

I run a small foundry operation and the large gates that we use are often cut with a plasma torch. We run a lot of stainless alloys from the 300 series to the ultra-tough 17-4ph and 15-5ph.

We prefer to use saws, both friction and abrasive but the geometries are difficult to hold at times.

I bought an Everlast a couple months ago. It has been a good unit. I use it a couple times a week. Consumables are inexpensive and readily available on the internet. So far so good.
A lot of machine for the price. Can't kick about that but If I had to depend on it as my only machine for a living every day I would buy a Hypertherm as I can get it serviced at any local welding shop.
Whatever you buy get a good water removal system. Your consumables and wallet will thank you!

I just bought 3 new TD Cutmaster 52 plasma cutters for our high school shop. They were several hundred cheaper than some others that I looked at and have held up wonderfully so far. Kids in high school tend to abuse things, so durability is very important to me.
