I have a Beaumont Vitali rifle. Does anyone know what caliber ammo it uses? Also is the ammo available? I measured the muzzle bore with a dial caliper and came up with .43

Well I looked in all my books and did not find that rifle. Do you have more info on it as in muzzle loader or bolt action or what??

11.3x50r or 11x52r ammo- terms slight varying but not uncommon with the old black powder cartridges that got measured groove to groove or land to land in barrel by different counries ro same country changing heir measureing standard after smokeless powder adopted to old cartridge. We see same thing in current Russian Markov pistol naming--9.2x18 or 9x18 Markov-same .3 nominal bullet. You measured .43 caliber on lands(likely) or grooves?- might look for some ammo at antique suppliers- Fiochi from Itali used to have some real old rounds made for the antiques that were legal for civilians to have with minimal paperwork- was source of .41 Swiss for a guy I told to check about 20 years back. RN.

Dutch and Italian bolt action single shots converted to magazine with the Vitali 4 round box. Think of the Mauser 1871 single shot made into repeater with the tube magazine to become the 71/84 model. Bolt handle holds striker leaf spring - was same system copied by the Japanese Muratas you were asking about ammo couple weeks ago. RN

Italian vetterli-vitali used 10.3x47r ammo. Dutch Beaumonts were the 11x52r/11.3x50r ammo. Vitali refers to the magazine system they were conveted with. Now you say it is Italian instead of Dutch? RN

Now I know why my books do not cover it it is to old for the info I have. It does list the Italian Carcano which is what replace that rifle

Ammo? maybe see if .348 Winchester case will fit- reloader forum has that as beginning for the Italian and swiss reloads. Other case mentioned was old Lebel. RN

From the photos I have found on the internet, I have a Beaumont Vitali rifle. The swiss vetterli rifle is different. How do I tell the difference between the Italian and the swiss?

I suggest you hit some of the firearms collectors sites. Not bragging, but I'm fairly well versed on rifles and have an extensive collection of reference material. I've never heard of a Beaumont Vitali. Beaumonts, yes. Vetterlis, yes. But never the model you mention. A quick google search shows there is info out there. Ammo...plan on handloading, probably case forming too and finding bullets may be an issue if a mould for casting it isn't readily available.

Swiss use a rimfire cartridge .41. The Italians copied the swiss bolt action but used a centerfire cartridge. Strikers offset in Swiss. Dutch Beaumonts as noted used a different bolt handle with the leaf spring for striker/firing pin in the handle. Lots of things happened after American civil war and before WW1 with the cartridge breech loader replacing loose charged muzzleloaders, then the smokeless powders boosting bullet velocities and chamber pressures. Was interesting times among the empirial armies trying to keep up with other armies technology. RN
