Brass Pipe Nipple Lengths

Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a super short close nipple? Looks like a standard 1/2" brass close nipple is 1-1/8" end to end. Need one about a 1/4" shorter. Nipple can be either brass or stainless. Thanks for any help.

When they are threaded, they're threaded till the pipe just comes thru the die. If you had a way to hold it so you could thread it till there was 1/4" coming thru the die then cut off the extra 1/4" you would have what you need. There is an internal pipe wrench that expands inside the pipe, maybe you could turn it into the die. Best tried with the brass.

Was always told that pipe must screw into the fitting a distance equal to its diameter- that is, a 1/2 inch pipe needs to screw 1/2 inch into the fitting. So a 1 inch close nipple would be the minimum, in order to get proper "tightness" of pipe into fitting.

A lot of the electrical box entrance and conduit fittings are pipe thread and I have seen some very short nipples used for various adaptations. Grinding 1/8" off each end of a standard brass nipple sounds like a winner to me?

Cutting the ends shorter would not change your length. Pipe threads are tapered. You could tap the mating ends 2 turns deeper to adjust the overall length of your assembly.

Over the years I've learned if they don't make what you need there might be a reason why, this is one of those cases you need that much nipple to properly seal, just like the other folks mentioned. If you explain WHY you can't use a standard close nipple betcha some folks might have ideas on how to get'er done and not leak

You get a nipple of 1/2 inch any shorter and you probably won't have enough thread to get it leak proof. The shoulders of your male fittings will meet before the threads are tight.
