Cheap tools.

Excuse me for being stupid and owning a Chrapsman 15" floor drill press. This morning I put a piece of steel on it to bore some holes. The table broke off. The collar that goes around the colume split into pieces. The part is no longer available. I'm not happy. I'm not going to try to weld the crap metal.

Sorry, but this was a $300 mistake that I want you to avoid.

Doesn"t Craftsman have a lifetime warranty? Time for a new drill press on their nickle?
I would be raising cain in their parking lot.

Lifetime warranty only applies to some hand tools. One year at the most on a drill press. No warranty at all if it is used for commercial purposes.

I could probably weld that for you... Its cast so no promises, but either way I'd do cheap... Thats the kind of project I'm looking for, to do cast iron welding videos with. Let me know if you're interested, my email is ChuckEdwards2009 (at) gmail.com

Crapsman buys theirs from China, for $ 150, and sells to you for $300. I'd buy a new HF one, if you have a HF store nearby, Freight would be a killer, on something that big. Might wanna check Walmart, or a farm store, sometimes they fo better than you would think.

At least HF is China crap and cheap. That and they don't try and hide it like Sears. Craftsman is double over priced and still crap.

I found out that no warranty on power tools when I had one of their drills crap out after about six months.

I have no complaints with Craftsman other than not being able to get parts. Of course any Craftsman in my shop is 40+ years old.
Sears royaly $*rewed up taking bids ever 3 or 4 years to have products built. Over the years a few repetubale manufactures built products for Sears but what they built wasn't always of equal quility to the brand name. An example that comes to mind is firearms. Some Ted Williams match Remington 11-48 , 870 and 1100 screw for screw but sure didn't perform the same. I have known some who bought a T. Williams very cheap and had it tweeked by a knowledgeable smity making it pretty reliable.

The drill press is 30 years old?

Are you kidding me? You're complaining that it broke, and that you can't get parts for it? A THIRTY YEAR OLD DRILL PRESS???

I'm sorry but you're just being plain unreasonable if you're serious.

Those mounts are quite similar among all model. A friend knocked mine over, I bought it in Japan in 1972, I found one on the Grizzly parts catalog, ordered it, and had it installled in 4 days for 28 dollars.
The diameter of the press column, the the diameter of the table sindle hole are much the same.

Post the diameter of your column, and the diameter of your table spindle and someone here will find you one. Don't be so negative. Make lemonade!

In my years of working, doing auto related stuff, i used a lot of craftsman tools. And, i still have them, and use them, in my tractor repairing! they still do the job. Also, i bought a Craftsman tool box-the lower box, on wheels. I have had it for around 40 years and the drawers still operate like they did when new, and it hasn"t gotten wobbly. I bought one for my son at the same time, and his is still in use. Craftsman sells a cheaper box, with thin metal, but not very good. I think they were made in China.
When metric bolts came into use, i bought a bunch of sockets and other things, made in Korea. Snap-on tried to make a killing from us, and raised their prices. the Korea stuff was as good as Craftsman, even better, i think. I still use those sockets, too, and wrenches.

Bingo!

If it has to be from China, no point in paying for Big Brand Name advertising. I'm not going to pay Brand Name prices for junk made in China.

(quoted from post at 05:35:28 03/11/13) This one is exactly 30 years old,

30 years old. Oh. I was under the impression is was a new one or a couple years old. I have to say, that's different.

I'm still using a Kanady-Otto (sp?) that pre dates at least Korea if not WW2.

I bought a 12 speed floor model at TSC for 140.00 on sale several years ago.It still sells for under 200.00.30 years is a long time for a drill press. In any case Sears is not a good place to buy tools..

Hi
with Most of this modern stuff you will be lucky to get parts in 10 years. or it just won"t be worth fixin.
I fix heavy equipment and only own 1 snapon socket all the rest of my tools are mid range price stuff.
Guys I know have spent thousands on high brand stuff and are still paying for it. snap on warranty is no good when a wrench falls in a hole on a machine and you can"t get it back lol. With my cheaper tools I have lost the odd one and broke the odd one or 2 doing dumb stuff to get out of a pinch. I have tools i bought back in 1990 when I started out from school, they are paid for 100 times over and still earning good money.
Don't be hard on some of the cheaper stuff it can be as good as or better than the top end brands, I just avoid the 2 dollar stuff .
Regards Robert
