belt dressing

What would you recomend for use on v-belts to reduce slippage? What is available other than spray cans? Mainly to be used on drive belt on riding mower. Thanks for your replies.

A new belt, tensioner or pulleys/sheaves.The correct belts, in good condition/alignment sheaves with correct tension don't slip. Somethings wrong and needs fixing.

Yup, a proper vee belt correctly tensioned won't slip in an application like a mower under normal circumstances. Chances are you have a bad belt, bearing, tensioner or the wrong belt. Simplicity used a special width belt for many years, for example, that you couldn't just pick up at the local NAPA.

You don't want to use belt dressing. Softens the belt and then it stretches. Used some on some combine belts once. Had to buy new belts.

I had a few times it did work just to get the job done till I could buy a new belt. For me to get to town is a good 40 minuets drive so just trying to avoid a trip.I have to admit only worked about half the time and still had to replace the belts.

Sometimes overlooked.

I agree with the comment about Simplicity belts,
on simplicity! I've had a Snapper, made by
Simplicity, for over 10 years...no problems ever
except worn out belts every 2 years.. only a
Snapper belt fits right! They design them that
way, I believe, to get the repeat sales!

If the flat inner surface of the belt is contacting the bottom of the pulley it will always slip. The drawing Jaden has posted shows the proper areas for the belt to bear on the pulley. You can tell if the belt is riding in the bottom if the pulley is polished shiny there. It may be fixable with a wider belt if both pulleys will accept one. HTH. Good luck.

There are four sizes of SAE belts. There are three angles of pulley.34 -36 and 38 degrees. If you want to clean up the pulley on a lathe you would set the angle to half the degrees . Example 36 degrees set to 18 degrees to clean up groove and check that it does not bottom out [as in the pics below]. If so then a cut across the bottom is needed. The belt will ride lower but now that the proper angle is recut will not slip.

nnalert for roofing works excellent on flat belts. Have not tried it on a v belt yet but assume it would be similar.

With all the dust and dirt flying around under the mower I wouldn't use belt dressing. The stickiness of the belt dressing will pickup dust and dirt and ware out your pulleys a lot faster. I would check idler tension and replace belt if needed.
