Notjustair 03-01-2013 17:27:49 174.238.70.124 Report to Moderator	Anyone have a drill bit sharpener? I had always thought that when they got too bad they were done for. Now I have so many dull sets. If it's made by Darex, then it's gonna still get the job done. It's just obviously much cheaper for the homeowner. Every drill I set up at work, be it for 1 hole or 100 or 1000 holes, gets a quick pass on the sharpener. Dad got a used drill doctor somewhere and I've used it (worked ok), but it's always not where I am so I go in the shop and use the bench grinder. If a whole bunch are dull, I just bring them all in and give them a quick once over. The added benfit is I can split the points too. Here's the one we have, and we've got the countersink attatchment to go with it. Older machinist in my first job- I was just out of Army, going to college, needed some $$$ beyond GI Bill if I was going to have a life...ie, chase girls.....'Frugal' machinist showed me how to sharpen drill bits with a simple gauge of stamped metal, with the correct angle degree and markings. Use it to this day. College Ag Engineering course, we made another, but not as accurate. Drill Doctors are fine for those that need them, but if you have a handy machinist to teach you how to use a simple gauge.......the older gentleman can teach us sooooo much!   [Reply]  [No Email]

I use it all of the time. I know many say that the Drill Doc does not work. I found you need to learn how to set it up correctly and it will work fine. It is easier to setup on larger bits. So start with a 1/2 or similar bit and you can feel how to set it much easier than on a smaller bit. Once you get used to setting it the smaller bits are easy to do too. I have found it does not work very well on bits under 1/8.   [Reply]  [No Email]

I can do just about all of our drills, which is 2 drill indexes, 1 of them containing fractional, number, and lettered drills, in less than an hour. Probably closer to a 1/2 hour. I can also sharpen them free hand and ussually do when the tip gets dull at the farm, but the Darex is just lots quicker, more accurate, and just does a better job.
