Variable Speed Follow-Up, Fan Size for Chicken Coop

Thanks for the replies on the variable speed fan question. It might not be economical to make the vent fan variable speed.

The next question is, if a 20 in. fan with a 1/3 hp 1750 rpm motor is being installed for a 9 x 12 chicken coop. Is it going to be too much ventilation? I don't want to be sucking chickens out the wall!

Bird numbers will vary, but probably a couple dozen in summer and half that in winter. Wisconsin climate, with windows and vents for air entry.

I have a 20" (it might be a 1/2 HP) on the peak of a 50 x 60 hangar. Good breeze through the 40' door when on. If those chickens are for eating I don't think you'll have to pluck them.

That's what I was kind of thinking as well, but just wanted second opinions. I had found the 20" fan used for the same price as new 12" fan, but will go with the 12" instead.

I do not think you need a fan for a building that small. I have always just provided low vents on one side of the building and high vents on the other and convection will do the work if it is hot in the building. Chickens in cold weather need a "well ventilated draft free environment" which is kind of a head-scratcher to me but I would think that a fan would make more draft than would be ideal.

ived in Texas since 1942 & none of extended family ever had a fan in chicken house.

I've got three chicken houses around here that I use to stagger layers and broilers. None of them have a fan. I just leave the door out to the enclosure open all the time.
