Sharp Knife again.

Are all the ceramic rods the same grit? I have one, 1/2 diameter about 10 inches long. wood handle. It doesn't seem to sharpen any knife really well. I've cleaned it until it is pure white.

Hello GordoSD,
Are you saying that the rod lost all of its abrasives propeties?
You may have taken all of it off while cleaning it. Some cheap steels are actually grouved the lengnt of the shaft, and are much courser than the smooth steel.
If you want a cheap finishing sharpener, go to your local marble dealer and get yourself a piece from the scrap pile. I'm sure they will let you have a piece, if you ask them.
Marble is a close grain and makes an excellent final touch on a blade. Even a piece of granite may work, altough i have not tryed it. Use it wet or dry your choice!

I wa asking about ceramic rod sharpeners. They are not sold with any "grit" ratings on them. Are they all 1200 or the same grit?

That ceramic rod would only be for finishing or touching up a knife in between sharpenings. You need a good arkansas stone or a good tri stone.

I keep my knives in very good condition. I have onw of those three arkansas stone Smith sharpeners. The coarse is good for axes. The fine for a knife a friend might give me to sharpen. That fine stone is about 600 grit. You need minimum 1200 to put fine edge on a working knife. Now for a skinning a more blunt sdge the fine on the Smith is perfect. I have used it over 45 years and it is a little worn down in the middle.
