Those are certain warnings your hard drive is ready to fail. Unfortunately you cannot predict when it's gonna go completely away on you - could be in the next 30 seconds or not for 3 months.

If you haven't already, back up all the data stored on that hard drive NOW!!

Hard drive is an easy swap.

I buy all of the cumputer equipment for home and the shop from New Egg. Good prices, great service.

If you can keep the drive going for a bit you can actually "clone" the new drive to match the old one. You need to download a trial copy of Acronis True Image. Then get your new drive connected to the computer and run the cloning feature.

Takes about an hour or so depending on how much data and how well the old drive works. Once complete swap them and you will be in business.

Sign up for Cabonite back up service NOW, it will quit completely, just a matter of time. I would not shut it off either. The last one I had fail, I got it working, and kept it going for four days and a power flicker ended it for good. I took the magnets out of it, and put them on the bottom of the gas tank to help catch the rust!

Here's the deal with hard disks: they have built-in error correction and redundancy, so they can have a lot of errors before you'll notice. In fact, all modern disk drives have built-in diagnostics and monitoring...which Windows ignores. By the time you start to actually see errors, that disk is on its last legs. Back it up now, while (if) you can.

If you buy a Western Digital or Seagate drive you can download free Cloning software from their web sites. It is not hard to do but you have to have both drives hooked to the computer with cables or a usb adapter.
