They're a fun piece of history. The cartridge is 7.62x84R. Some say the 'R' is for the rim on the casing and some say it's there because they're Russian. If you find one with an octagon receiver instead of round grab it for me :-) That model is rare. Do a youtube search and you'll find quite a few videos about Mosin Nagant modifications. One of my son's got one when he was in Texas for under $100 with the bayonet and a cleaning/maintenance kit. If you use the surplus ammo be sure to clean it after use. The primers have a salt that is corrosive. You'll also need a tube of IcyHot for your shoulder.

Bet you mean 54 instead of 84 LOL. Years ago I had a hex topped one but it was worn out and you could aim it at a target at 50 yards and maybe hit it. It was sold to me as a 7.35 Italian so it had been shot with the wrong ammo so that sort of messed up the barrel.
