I just acquired a Merc o tronic 98 ignition tester that doesn’t work. This is the plug in model but there is no battery in it. Does anybody know if it has to have the battery to function or is it broke?

Also does anyone have a manual and wiring diagram for this unit, preferably in pdf format that they can send me? Thanks

I had a different reader that would not read a ford van I have and found out if the cigar lighter fuse is blown it will not work because reader gets its power thru the plug under the dash that runs thru that fuse. Maybe merc o tronic is still in bussiness and has web site? Good luck

Yes, the box shaped one used by the boat motor guys and mag guys to check coils condensers and the like... I think the 98, 9800 and 7200 or 7800 are all similar.

I don t think that they will work without a Battery. I had My Brother put a rectifer in mine , He adjusted it to 7 1/2 volts . The battery cost too much & would be dead after a short period of time . I just got tired of having it being dead when I wanted to use it.

The Mercotronic testers used the 110v power for only certain tests.

Other tests were powered by the lantern battery.

Repairs are available, if needed, but I don't think they will send a schematic.

Certain parts are no longer available.

Thanks guys for your help, I had found that web site but had not found the repair section. I think I will temp in a battery bank of D cells or something like that and see what I get.
Power light doesn't even come on.

Still looking for a manual if anyone has one.

We had a magneto repair workshop at our cubfest/IHC Winter Convention just today. He demonstrated the model 98 and mentioned that it required a 7 1/2 V lantern battery. I'm not familar with a 7 1/2 V battery, but didn't question him about that.

I have a model 98, in working condition, and a
manual. The manual has 102 pages. there is NO
wireing diagram, or service instructions.
the first 26 pages is how to hook it up to test
various things, car coils, magneto coils, armaturs
condensers, distributors. The next 76 pages are specifications for virtually any brand of auto
coil, magneto coil, small engine and outboard ciol, and condensers.
It runs off a 7-1/2 volt battery, no longer
available, but the people I bought it from, said
a six volt would work, but a lantern battery
wouldn"t last long.
I use a 6 volt sealed lead-acid rechargeable cell

I have a copier/scanner/printer but the scanner
part doesnt work...anyway, I wouldn"t know how
to get it into e-mail and am too old to learn.
If there is any interest, I could take it to a
printing place,(Insty Prints,Office Depot)and have
them print off a few copies. I could "Estimate"
it would cost about $10 for printing, postage,
big envelope. My e-mail at Y/T is open, or go to
