DeWalt dropping 14.4v batteries?

A few years ago, I bought a DeWalt cordless cutoff saw (ergomically a dangerous design BTW). Went looking at what an extra battery or two might cost me and local store had dozens of 18volt batteries and no other voltage.
Did I get in on the portable biz just in time to buy a model phased out?
I see their new portable saw looks much safer, but clumsier, IMHO.
I suspect I can find 14.4's somewhere but might buy a new saw if batteries get too expensive.

I just got one from Grainger last week. It was in stock and arrived overnight just link normal. I paid $60 but that was with work discount, I think normal over the counter price is $80 or better. If you need a battery pack, expecially if you need 2 of them, wait till you see the drill kit on sale and buy that, battery packs are usually under $50 each that way and come with a spare charger and drill to boot.

Even if Dewalt stops making the 14.4 battery packs, there will always be places like BatteryPlus that will rebuild an existing pack. BUt I doubt Dewalt would discontinue the battery packs evey soon after dropping the other tools that use them. All I can think of is man, we got a lot of Dewalt drills floating around for them to do that.

I'm not sure about Dewalt, but many of those batteries can be rebuilt. If there are screws to allow you to open the case, then it can be rebuilt. Interstate Batteries will rebuild them. I have had Craftsman and Ryobi batteries rebuilt. They seem to be just as good and a little cheaper than buying a new one. In your case, if they don't make 14.4 volt anymore, it may be the way to go.

Leo,
I have many 18v dewalt tools. I dislike dewalt batteries. I buy aftermarket Ni-Mh batteries from ebay.

Go to ebay and you will find 2 amp-hr Ni-cd aftermarket 14.4 v batteries. If I were you and had a charger for Ni-Mh, I would look for them on ebay too.

Keep dewalt tools, lose the dewalt batteries.

ebay 14.4v

Another vote for Batteries Plus. They had a big unusual battery for a tractor and they rebuilt the battery for my Lincoln grease gun.

Search the internet and Ebay. I got batteries for my old Makita stuff for about 1/3 of what Makita wanted and they last just as well or better.

Someday I'm going to pry apart some dead packs and learn to fix them myself. Solder, heat shrink and Crazy Glue. How hard can it be?

How is the DeWalt design unsafe? There is a saftey switch to prevent trigger pull. That is much better than 90% of corded Sawsalls.

The handle is too horizontal, so when kick back occurs(and it will) your whole arm is not positioned to absorb the thrust, it depends on your hand grip and the muscles cannot react fast enough. On most cut off saws, the handle is more perpedicular to your arm and the mass of your arm is there instantly to counter act the kick back thrust. And that safety switch thing really tests your squeeze capability by its position. But it is absolutely essential for safety. IMHO Leo
