Tools for Assembly?

When I worked in a farm machinery shop the shop foreman had a set of studs with a screwdriver slot at the non-threaded end. I think he got them from the Snap On truck. I made myself a set that I was pleased with. Now that my eyes are failing I have started using them more to guide parts into place. I put them on tapped holes where cap screws are used and after placing matching parts into place and have some cap screws in place I take a screwdriver and remove them and replace with the cap screws, I used them this morning putting on a waterpump. What is the proper name for them?

Hello 60 acre hillside,

I would call them guide studs.I made many for heads and differential installation.
Sometimes you need to make them short,(for tight clearance) so a slot will unscrew them, and a magnet will take them out. They come in handy on water pumps too, keeping the gaskets in place.

I have some of those as well. I call them alignment bolts. Also with the screwdriver slot in them. On my metric bolts I put a cross on the end so that I can tell them apart from my std ones.

I made some clear back in the early 70's when I was working on automatic transmissions. Cut the head off bolts and left them long so I could unscrew them by hand. I just call them alignment studs.

If a person was making some of those, would it be an advantage to carefully grind a taper on the threaded end so they align easier?

Gene

PS. good idea, I think I am gonna make some.

Made a lot of these thru the years. Works well to put 2 blades in your hack saw when cutting the slot. One blade seemed to me that the slot wasn"t quite wide enough. EGBinOR
