Strated building a smoker Bar-B-que today

Yesterday the boy and I talked about needing to replace the old rusted out smoker I have. Told him I wanted to do an under the grill coal/wood box. So today and looked at the old propane tanks I have laying around. I have around 10 of the bar-b-que grill size tanks on hand. Found one that has been sitting open to the air for years and cut the end off. Guess if I am lucky I will have it done by spring.
Yes I made sure it was safe to cut. Plus it was half full of water so I was pretty sure from the get go

Rich..........I put a 2 drawer file cabinet next to my barbeque and run a 4" elbow from the top of the file cabinet into the side of the barbeque..I use an old cast iron pan in the top drawer, put my hickory into that, get it going with a propane torch and close the drawer..open the upper vents on the barbeque a little to help with the flow and it works great! Inside the file cabinet I put a baffle in the top front to keep the smoke from coming out at the top of the drawer..it has no choice but to go up into the barbeque............

I plan to use some old 2 or 3 inch 1/4 inch thick pipe to go up into the top box. Not sure what I am going to use yet for the top box. Have a few old gas tanks from big rig gas burners that I may use but not sure if I can get the gas smell out of them or not. I do know I want to use something thicker then the run of the mill grills you buy in town. I hate having one last 5 year just to have to buy a new one again. Noticed yesterday when we grilled steaks on the grill the propane burner was not working as it should be so need to replace or fix that

Burned some trash and brush last night with a 40 or so gal tank sitting in the fire so tank is now safe to cut in half to get to step 2
