Could be all manner of things. I have a very nice high end Hypertherm in the shop (cant remember the number) that was traded in at the local welding store for same reason. I got it for free too. Mine had a bad output contractor and the pats to fix were around $75 4-5 years ago. I am no plazma expert in any manner of speaking but you need to check into the gun or torch consumables and choices carefully. Parts for the older one like mine are getting very pricey. I used to get a card of 5 of the tips and whatever the part is under them, diffuser? but not last time, whoa! I bought 2 each. Guy behind the counter is getting me some info on a replacement gun with updated technology.

Look to pay about $460 for a replacement torch. Just checked into it to replace my PAC123. Although the new torches are supposed to be good on consumables, figured in my situation it wouldn't be worth it.

Most of the older ones with the expensive consumables can be upgraded to the new torches. If you use a lot its worth it. I think mine had a PAC123T torch or something like that that is the same as some Miller models that hypertherm supplied torches to.

Might check the Hypertherm pages on weldingweb. Jim Colt looks to be a straight-up guy on his company's eqpt.

I dont know Ken, we will see what the price of the conversion is? Truth is we used to use it a lot but we now have both hand held and miter type cold saws that do the bulk of the work that used to be done with a straightedge and the plazma torch.
