Help ID Tool

I've used this tool for many years but I don't know what it was specifically made for. It's a slide hammer I used it to remove small bearings and bushings. Thanks, Joe

Probably originally made for pulling pilot bearings
(bushings) from the end of crankshafts but should
come in handy for pulling any bushing/bearing of
that approximate diameter.

Brian, jackinok,
Thanks for the input. That sounds like a good guess but I'm hoping someone here has seen one before and knows more about the tool.
I do know that The Greb Company made some tools back in the twenties such as the Greb Automatic Grip Puller and the Greb Tire Remover and Replacer.

I think several have already ID'd it as a bearing or bushing puller. Insert into bearing and tighten thumb screw to expand against inside of bearing. As already mentioned, likely for pulling pilot bearings, but would work on any small bearing that was inaccessible from the other side.

Shadetree,
There is a difference between knowing and assuming what something is used for. Tools are frequently used for other than their intended purposes. I've used this tool for over 30 years in situations as mentioned by those who responded and then some. It has a very short slide distance and at times to short to apply adequate force making me break out my OTC puller.

The company went out of business some time in the early 30's so maybe finding someone who actually purchased one is asking a bit to much. I was hoping there may be a manual or some sales info that has survived out there somewhere. Maybe in an old tool catalog.

Mark from Ohio found the tool. By placing a hyphen between the two sets of numbers he came up with a federal stock number (DNS) from the 40's and found it to be a WWII military issued tool. [u:1d76aee8e4]41-P-2906-15[/u:1d76aee8e4] was list as "Puller, clutch pilot bearing" in several Army TM9 series manuals for trucks and a tractor.

Don't know if The Greb Company is the same as Greb Co. but could be. It's nice to know some specifics about this neat tool.

Thanks for all the help. Joe
