hdy clinder ?

Has any one ever made a two way cylinder from a one way cylinder such as you find on a boss snow plow ? I bought a manual 6 ft eagle V plow for a UTV and am going to make it a scoop instead of the V. I know I could just add some springs to pull it back , but would prefer hdy if possible..I will be mounting it on a small 4 wheel drive tractor. Its time to give the old Economy tractor a rest and me to.. LOL. Thanks in advance for any advice..

Very easy to set a 2 way hyd cylinder up so it is a one way acting cylinder. You do need to make or buy a vent plug for the port you do not use or it will vacuum lock on you which can cause damage to the cylinder seals. Most any good farm and home place will have the vent or you can make a vent plug by drilling a small hole in a pipe plug such that it does not let a lot of crude into it

Thanks for the reply.. but I'm trying to go the other way, making a single acting into a 2 way. I wondered if any one has tapped the side or rod end with success..to retract the rod ? I don't find any small, small 2 way cylinders and they are quite pricey at that. This is a low budget project if you know what I mean..

Making a single acting into a double is not possible due to the fact the hyd seals in the single acting is set up for pressure only one way and if you did some how drill and tap and installed a fitting it would not last very long if it lasted one time. Double acting cylinders are easy to find and on my place a dime a dozen but I have a lot of them laying around

On some single action cylinders the ram is the same size as the bore. So there is no way of putting high pressure oil on the other side of the cylinder.

You can't just drill and tap into the cylinder tube above the piston. There isn't enough material there to hold up under pressure. You've got maybe two threads there. Besides, the fitting would protrude down into the cylinder and tear up the piston.

To even have a chance at making it work, you would have to weld an outlet port to the tube. Probably a good job for a TIG welder.

Gentlemen thanks for the replies. I never thought about rod and bore size being the same or the seals only holding pressure in one way. Guess I'll be looking for some springs to retract the blade to its straight position . Thanks again..
