Buying a different truck

Hello,
Not to start a color war of sorts nut I am in the market for a used pick-up. a 3/4 ton or ton and a dual wheel would be ok but not necessary. 4x4 is a must and crew cab. I am a ford man thru and thru. I know many will say the other makes have better trucks but I have put a lot of miles on fords. Basically, I want to pay cash for a truck and I have 15k to spend. I would like opinions on what years I should stay away from and the old gas vs diesel argument. What are your opinions and where does a guy look for the best deal. Thanks

jimbob2, As I said below in the other truck thread. A 2010 F-250/350 (first yr for 6.2 gas), Regular-Cab, 4x4 with about 75K miles. Can found for about $18K.(A little hard to find , but out there) That is the newest Ford gas out there, It seems to be a beast as far a power and reliability. Not the knock the 5.4 but this new engine has it all over it. As far a a Crew or Super-Cab even harder to to find.
Go a little older and you will need to take a V10
I don't hear bad about it, I just don't hear Good!

Sounds like your going to use it for work so spend the extra and go with a diesel. Can't beat a Cummins for reliability, mileage or power. Just a loyal Dodge guy so might be a little biased.

I'm actually in the market right now for something similar. I would recommend gas unless your situation meets one of the following requirements: You plan to resell the truck in a couple years, you do a lot of heavy towing, or you drive a lot of miles. In these 3 situations the diesel makes sense. Otherwise you are paying a the higher purchase and maintenance costs without much return.

In most cases you can expect to pay ~$5k more for a 10 year old diesel truck. The truck has the same (if not more) wear on it than the equivalent gasser. In my situation, it would take ~10 years to recover the upfront cost of the diesel engine.

From a dependability stand point, I know more happy Ford owners than any other brand. Personally, I'm looking for a Dodge with the v10 motor. Good luck.

Jack, all major brands are good, and since yer a Ford man, I'd stick with what you like. I always used Chrysler and Dodge trucks and in 1996 I got P.O.'ed at my local Dodge dealer. Looked pretty hard at Fords, but they still seemed to be having some problems with the diesel motor and trans problem.
I bought my current '96 Dodge, 'caus I knew that if I had a problem with the Ford I'd be kicking myself! Buy what you are used to!!

Do not buy a Dorf with the 6.0.D You will be tempted because if a dealer gets one in he will do anything to get rid of it.

Gordo, the 6L might be a good deal if the dealer will throw in a tow truck... I would want a picture of the tow truck, tho..... My neighbor bought a 6L... would have to give it away on a trade in.... worthless

Your close but they better throw in a 100000 mile warranty or enough money back to fix all of the issues with aftermarket parts head studs, egr delete, none Vg turbo and a set of injectors then I'd take it without the tow truck
