I want to put in a wireless driveway alarm . Anybody have good or bad expereance with any . Would like to have one that did not go off everytime a deer walked down the driveway . It will be about 200 yrds. from the house .

We have a new, to us, home that has a wire less drive way alarm. We walk past it many times and it never goes off unless a vehicle drive past it.

I gave up on my drive way alarm. Ordered a Milton's gas station bell from McMaster Carr. Car comes up the drive and you get a DING DING. My hearing is not so good; but, that will get you out of bed. Can I check your oil sir? Ed

There's one that has a sensor, that picks up large metal objects, like a car or tractor. It has what looks like a piece of 2 or 3" White ABS pipe, maybe 18" long, and a length of wire that you order, for the length of your driveway + the length needed to install it to where you want, in the house. The sensor and the wire are buried, next to the driveway (doesn't have to be under the driveway, just near it). I can't remember the name, but the turf farm down the road has it hooked to lights and the lights come on, along the driveway, as you drive in, in the dark.

What you want is a sensor that sees change in magnetic field. A large metal object such as a car will trip it. Cartell is the one that I am most familiar with but there are others. Perhaps Google magnetic driveway sensors. Hope this helps

dakota alert WPA3000 162.00. home security store.com. my driveway is 700 feet long,no false alarms. works great.

I have a motion detector type. Senseor looks like a motion detector light, works on the same principle. Wireless to receiver, a plug in unit, slightly larger than a pack of cigaretts. Batteries in sensor seem to last forever. However, way too sensitive, goes off a lot in windy conditions, and simply from air movement. Wife keeps unplugging it. Driveway is on bedroom side of the house, and I don"t like suprise visitiors when I"m in other places in the house.

I tried the dakota 3000 and it worked great for the house BUT it would not send a signal inside my shop which is a metal building...

Well my "wireless" drive way alarms usually last about 10-12 years. The effectiveness kind of fades after that.

They are kind of high maintenance and heavy to lift. They usually weight in at about 60-70 lbs. The colors have been different from one model to the next.

Here is a picture of the latest one. He was just a few months old then. He is about twice the size now. LOL

Now to actually answer your question. I have tried several brands of the wireless alarms. None of them have worked very well. They seem to give too many false alarms. I went back with a hard wired one. It works much better. It is a Dakota Alert brand. They sense the metal in a car/truck/tractor.

Dakota alert

I have a Dakota wireless alert. It will trip when a deer or other animal walks in front of it. I have a problem with it not detecting some vehicles. I would say that it misses about one of every four vehicles that come down the drive.

I have a wireless motion alarm in my pole barn, about 175 ft from bedroom. False alarms in the middle of the night is not a good thing. Some times, it may be a bird or mouse. A power surge will cause a false alarm too.

Tried putting a motion alarm in front of doors, not a good idea. Too many things will set it off.

JD , I have 4 portable alerts like yours and they work good in the warm weather but they sleep in the barn in the cold weather and dont here much . I put a new porch on the front of my house and cant here much inside anymore . I will checkout the Dakota , thanks guys

That's what I have! Been working since 1978! The UPS man knows what it is and steps on the hose when making a delivery. Only time it went off in the night was when some bad boys intent on siphoning some gas ran over it about 11:00 P.M.--I turned on the outdoor light and such a peeling out on the gravel was never heard. One of 'em yelled back "Didn't know you were home"!

I've had a "Dakota Alert" for over 10 years, and
am very happy with it. Yes, it beeps for Deer, Fox, Racoon, but thats what we want, as our
biggest worry is humans !

I have the Mule Driveway Alarm from Amazon now for almost three years. It triggers on metal objects only, no false alarms with the many Deer or the dogs. It triggers on objects as small as the neighbor kids ATV. The driveway was relocated slightly right after I put in the alarm but it was not necessary to move the alarm. It is not visible but if they try to drive around the other side they will hang up in a ditch.

I also have motion detector lights at the front of the garage, on a pole by the driveway, and in front and back of the shop.

What Andy said...I think the technical term is "magnetomiter", spelling might be off. Only large moving metal masses (cars, tractors, motorcycles, etc.) set them off. The instructions will guide you on how/where to place it so that vehicles passing on the roadway don"t set it off, but close enough that those coming in the driveway/lane do. I"ve had 3 brands over the past ten years. Have a new Mule brand, hundred bucks on Amazon, seems really well built. It"s also the only one of the three that has had adjustable volumn on the indoor alarm. One of the other two happened to have about the right volumn for us, the other didn"t (way loud), the ability to adjust is nice.
