Refrigerator Thermostat

I've been a landlord for over 40 years. I finally had my first thermostat go bad on a 15 year old ref. Went on line to buy one. Some places wanted upwards of $85. Cheapest so far is around $45. Where they get you is the shipping and handling.

I think I'll store this ref and wait for a compressor on another ref to go bad, then use it's thermostat.

When you get to be my age, there aren't too many firsts to look forward to. Why a thermostat?

Here is the kicker, past summer I cleaned out my garage and got rid of two ref that had good thermostats. Guess you should never get rid of things. Don't know when you'll need it.

I had one go bad on a 30 year old Frigidaire and it was NLA. The things to consider were the mounting configuration where it attaches to the refrigerator, the shaft configuration where the knob attached to the thermostat, and the length of the capilary tube. I found one on Amazon for $17. There is a small screw inside the thermostat behind the selector knob shaft that must be set to calibrate the on-off temperature once the thermostat is installed.

I would replace it even if high priced and keep it as long as you can.
When you ever get a new frig they replace circuit boards in the hundreds of dollars.
There are no cheap fixes with the new ones.
