another oil question

doing maintenance on my new-to-me 1983 prime mover skid steer. previous owner did not have any manuals for the machine. i finally located an owner manual. the hydraulic system per the manual says to run se/sf 10w40 motor oil. prev owner has been running hy-tran. the drive motors are trw torqmotor mab/mae series, and the pump is a sunstrand sauer 18 series. from a previous post on the chaincase, the se/sf is an old rating. sooo.... is there any problem running hy-tran, or, should i be running the newer version of se/sf motor oil, or.... maybe rotella 15w40?? thx

I would just keep running the Hy-tran myself. It is used in many hydro setups without any problems. Plus it has additives for anti foaming and moisture protection that engine oil would not have.

I use Hy-tran in all my hydraulic systems with no problems. My loader tractor has 60% Hy-trans with 40% Lucas hydraulic booster. Like JD Seller said Hy-trans has additives in it that motor does't have.

glennster,
I have a 2004 Terrimite, T5C, backhoe. It has a TRW hydrostatic motor. Don't know what the pump uses. In big bold letters, it says use 10w40 or 10w30 only. DO NOT USE HYDRAULIC OIL, IT WILL CAUSE DAMAGE. There is only one pump for everything, the motor and all the cylinders.

I would try to contact the place that made your skidder.

Here is what I down loaded from prime mover skid steer. It wasn't your exact model, but it looks to me like they want 10w40. I'll try to make a shortcut to the manual. The hyd oil was on page 115. LOL I would use 10w40.

Hydraulic Fluid
Keep the hydraulic system filled with one of the following:
• 10W40 SE or SF manufacturers suggested oil.
• Hydraulic fluid as recommended by equipment manufacturer, but the viscosity should not
drop below 50 SSU or contain less than .125% zinc anti-wear additives.
CAUTION: Do not mix oil types. Any mixture, or an unapproved oil, could
deteriorate the seals; Maintain the proper fluid level in the reservoir. When
changing fluid, completely drain old oil from the system. It is suggested also that
you flush the system with clean oil.
Filtratio n·
Recommended filtration 20-50 micron.
Oil Temperature
Maximum operating temperature 200 OF 193.3°el.

george, thanks for the info. that is the skidder that i have, but mine has an isuzu 3 cyl diesel in it. it has been running hytran for quite some time. i am going to change back to 10w40 as per the manual. it did call for se/sf oil also. but it isnt available anymore. i will use the new rated 10-40 i guess. i wonder if rotella 15-40 would be better than the 10-40. rotella has more additives, but would it be better or worse on the hydraulics?????? thanks for the info. unfortunately, prime mover sold the skidsteer line years ago and as far as i can tell who ever bought it is no longer around. prime mover just does fork lift trucks now.

glennster, I use 10 w 40 year around. Use a brand name oil, either valvoline or shell, what ever I find on sale. I would stay away from additives. The owners manual is concerned with hydraulic oil damaging the seals. 10 w 40 means the oil is 10 weight in the winter. 15 w 40 means it 15 w in the winter. Wouldn't use in Indiana.

I don't know if hyd fluids still have zinc, but they've taken the zinc out of (all or most?) motor oil. That's why the SE & SF classifications are obsolete. So....you're best bet may be hyd fluid if it still has zinc.
