Goodmorning everyone!!

So, here's my latest project. I got this truck in 2011 and I really like it. I'd planned on doing a dual bumper build on it literally since the day we picked it up, but never actually sat down and did it...

Then I started school and couldn't just take the truck out of comission for a week or two, since I'd need something to do my 70-mile-a-day commute with. But then... Christmas break came around. Two weeks off, my buddy Wes (who I took welding classes in high school with, and worked on many projects since with) happened to be coming home from college for a few weeks, and the salvage steel yard lowered their prices on flat material by 7 cents per pound.

The stars all lined up in a row, and I decided it was now or never.

I bought $175 worth of steel, "D" rings, some mig wire, paint and a few other things and when both bumpers are done, I expect to be in this project $300-$400 in total.

I dove headfirst into this project without any form of a written plan or idea on how it'd turn out. I figured we'de just start cutting plate, and welding it together an hoped for the best... I had a few ideas in my head about how I wanted it to look, but I decided to just build as I go. Whether or not it looks like I originally imagined wasn't important to me, as long as it was cool. So far, I'm very happy with how things are going...

Its been a lot of work, which means a lot of video material :)

Its a really fun project... I've built now three sets of bumpers, and I like this set the most, simply because we have free reign to build it however we feel... No pictures to go off... No customers to communicate the details with, just cutting and welding.

I've got the first two videos up... Hope y'all enjoy them... and have an awesome weekend. I've got a lot more to do, I'm off to the garage now, after coming in around 3 this morning. This must be DONE by Monday when I go back to school. Enjoy everyone, Yeeeeeeehaw!! :) Audio/Video clip:video1 video2

Lanse, any chance of a photo? Youtube does not work here, but I have always liked to see what you come up with when you build something. It gives me ideas to fiddle with in my spare time here.

Thanks,
Jay

Well, the smaller, but better half lives here, so after I finish working for the year, I come back to China to live with her and be close to the rest of the family. When construction season opens up again, I go back to the US.

I want to see it after you metal prep it, epoxyprime, and paint to match the truck. Some black rubber pads from part of a mud flap behind those rings?

Don't get too shook up by the liability boys. State of Pennsylvania say's these must be metal, as strong as the original and with no sharp or protruding edges. Rear collisions are very rare, anyone with any consiousness rolls up and see's a bumper like this, and they back way off.

I need one of them stickers. Put it right above my tailpipe.

What's the red one say?

The stock bumper is pretty chintzy. I backed my 06 into something that should have easily moved, and it bent the bumper, tweaked the tailgate hinges, so I tied a 1 inch ratchet strap to the backhoe, and used it to straighten everything out, plus a couple love taps on the bumper with a BFH.

Likely that voided your warranty and will open you up to all kind of lawsuits when someone hits you and totals their car . Should have checked with your lawyer , ins co , and then just forgot about it all together. j/k ..sweet looking bumper ! great work .

Nice work on your build.

You might want to incorporate some nylon bushings into those D-rings or the rattling will drive you nuts.

Dave

Yeah I've wondered how thats gonna work out. I'll have to do something...

But the next thing I do to this truck will be a dual flowmaster exhaust, which should drown out the rattling some ;)

Thanks for the reply :)
