Ford vs. Chevy Pickup Resale?

Absolutely not trying to strike up controversy here, but which pickup has the best resale value nationally? I have my opinion, but what are the facts?

Six of one. More important are options and condition. A beat Chev is worth half of a creampuff Ford, and vice versa. Color makes a huge difference. May as well just bury a blue truck. Ditto yellow.
No 4wd north of the MD line, bury it.

I have no scientific evidence to support this but I will put my money on Chevy.
Chevys are more expensive when new and hold their value longer.
Now when both pickups get hauled off to the scrap man the Fords may fetch a little more as I think they might be heavier.

Well since I have been watching Criag's list for a used car I see a lot of truck up for sale. Seems like a Chev of the same year has a n asking price of half again that of a ford of the same year. Parts for a Chev truck are for the most part cheaper then that of a Ford car or truck but that is due to more Chev parts like alternators working on many models. Note this is just what I am seeing and what I know for years of doing minor repair on car and trucks

Watch the five year old GMs, they are falling apart from rust almost as fast as the mid 1970s did.Dodge is not any better. BTW I drive a Chevy.

Very area specific question and highly dependant on the model. If you looked at say diesel 1 tons, the Ford 6.0 fiasco has driven down Ford 250/350 resale values quite badly but boosted the old 7.3L trucks values.

As well as the Dodge Cummins values. Duramax not as much, as they have injector issues.

Glenn, Work done, care and maintenance dictate the resale value of a truck. Take a Ford and a GM, equal equipment, Work them side by side, equal treatment, maintenance, care. After 3 to 5 yrs the Ford will be in better shape thus be worth more,......
One point,,,
the Beds will not support a crossover tool box at all, the bed will crack out and collapse under the wt of a normal tool box. At the corners and at the rear of where the crossover box rests. They Have to have a heavy angle iron bed cap put in place to prevent this.
Certain areas are more one variety over another.
Town / City trucks are by in large GMs , where the guys who work out of their trucks use Ford/Dodges and for the most part 4X4s too, most of the time. At least here in Central Texas. I can't speak for other areas of the US.
From 1986 to mid 2003, Ford Crew-cabs, 4x4, F-0250s / F-350s once they are sold they just didn't come back to dealers for resale. At least that was the case prior the 6.0 Dsls. Since that debacle, that has changed. Also in that time frame you could stand on any street corner where there was a used car/truck store and there would be 2 to 5 GMs most any given time.
So MY money stays on Ford, not GM here!!
So far I have not said any thing Political
Now I will....

And I hear that a lot in my day to day visiting with folks.

Most used pickup trucks have been run hard and put up wet. Finding a good used pickup is like finding a Baptist teetotaler: they're said to exist but I've never seen one. Condition has more to do with used truck value than make, and condition is mostly determined by who owned the vehicle and what they did with it.

Its been a while, but for yearssssss I was in the used truck and tractor business (talked to and learned from dealers, professional mechanics, truck auctioneers and people in the truck sales business for years on end, and based on my experience and values when I sold a truck) so I can speak from experience WHEN I was in the business and WHERE I was located. Im NOT giving you OPINIONS or liked what dad and grandad liked etc., Im ONLY reporting the FACTS.....

That being said (lawyers love disclaimers lol) when I was in the used truck business where I was located CHEVYS BROUGHT A LOT MORE MONEY AND WERE EASIER TO SELL THEN THE SAME EQUIPPED MAKE N MODEL OF A FORD PERIOD ,,,,,,FACT NOT OPINION

One buddy who sold used trucks for YEARS always laughed and said "ever notice if you walk past a truck and smell hot oil or anti freeze ITS A FORD"

Another buddy (now deceased) who sold a tonnnnnn of used trucks for yearsssssss always laughed at me when I brought a Ford home for sale to which I always responsed BUT YOU CAN BUY THEM SOOOOOO MUCH CHEAPER THEN A CHEVY AT THE AUCTION (which is a pure FACT, NOT talkin Opinion here, that was simply a cold hard FACT, I bought at auctions for years) Then he says YEAH BUT SEE HOW MUCH LONGER IT TAKES BEFORE IT SELLS and laughed at me, and you know he was always RIGHT grrrrrrrrrr

504......Doesn't matter what is driven. You may like Ford,GM,Dodge, Bentley, or Benz. They ALL rust. Say you live in South Dakota. Rapid City area. If SD THINKS its going to get cold and have some snow or freezing temps they POUR the liquid salt (calcium bichloranate) on the roads. They have been using this liquid salt for years. I see newer vehicles 2005+ full of rust. Now where I live 180 miles south of Rapid City, SD in Nebraska. We are using the liquid salt here ONLY when the roads get slushy/snowpack. We seen a 2007ish GMC full of rust. As with many Fords and Dodges. Its all in where you live as how bad they rust. Not just in one brand of rides. My opinion is GM has the best resale value off all because of styling/driver control comfort. Gms have always been like a car. IFS since 1988-present. Their overall cab comfort is twice that of a ford with the square/hard seats. I've had both 07 Ford 1/2 ton and a 09GMC. I'll take the GMC over anything. Even the new Dodge Cummins. Now a owner of a 02 Cummins 4x4. Only my opinion tho.

The Duramax injector issues were ONLY the first few years
built. LLY engine if I remember right 200?-2005.5. The 2006
has the LBZ engine. No injector issues like the older diesels.
I'd take a VW Bug over a Ford any day. 6.0 diesel's weren't
even good enough for scrap iron. Those have injector issues
big time. I'll stay with my Cummins. I don't have to remove
the CAB to change injectors. -

It was (a FACT) at least when and where I was in the used truck sale business, note Im NOT taking sides or offering any "opinion" mind you.

I own and have owned both makes. There's things I like and dislike about both. For the most part, the Fords get the most 'tin' work and the Chevies get the most wrench work. I decided a major mechanical failure on a Ford is it's death warrant, too expensive and hard to work on. Chevies tend to have more major structural issues here in the northeast. Fords for sale are more common around here and usually cheaper, but they are usually pretty well spanked by the time they go on the block. After 1996 Chevy and Ford are about equal as far as quality, performance and longevity. I buy on price and condition anymore. A Chrysler product doesn't come into consideration, sorry.

Any truck thats straight with good 4x4,especially older powerstrokes and cummins are really hot here in Mo,no matter the miles,it seems

Around here it's difficult to find a SRW gasoline powered 3/4 or one ton for sale that isn't used up.
As for the DRW diesels there are allot of them in good shape with high miles. It looks like Fords are a bit higher priced. That's around here. Could be different in other areas.
Someone mentioned earlier that Fords were better mechanically. Interestingly most of the independent shop owners around here drive Ford trucks.

The OP didn't specify 1/2, 3/4 or 1 ton. 1/2 ton might be a different story as many of those are used as daily drivers and not worked like the heavier trucks.

What you do is buy a Ford, and a Dodge, and when the Dodge body falls apart around the Cummins, and the Powerjoke takes a hike in the Ford, you have the best parts left of both for making a good truck.
