Argon tanks revisited...

Called around today ohio air gas had the best deal 100 down
and 9 dollars a month to rent get your deposit back at end of
lease.. They were 21 or 25 to fill on a 150cf tank.. The lws
place was 200 for a 120cf bottle and 40 to fill... I have a friend
that said he has a good "k" bottle.. I asked how many cf he
wasn't sure but said its big and has a good test.. Does anyone
know how many cf a type k bottle is? I think it's a 220 but not
sure. He wants a 150 bucks is this a good deal?

Assuming its from "Scott Specialty Gasses" its 300 cubic feet.

If its from Praxair, however, its a 200 footer...

Either way, its a nice sized cylinder... I leased a 330 from Airgas last spring for my Mig, and its just now close to running out. Here's a chart that should help you.

Things must have really changed. I haven't bought any gas for my welder in years. I don't pay a monthly fee for the bottle. I bought the first bottle and exchange it when it's empty. if you loose the cap, there is a fee of $65.

I think a K might be a 244 cu. ft. Argon would come in a 122 cu. ft. size not 150. However if you do the math, it's $108/yr to lease x 3 years equals $324, without being filled, but you still have to keep paying every year. Up here a 122 argon costs $325 and comes filled with argon. In the long run it saves a lot of money to buy the cylinders outright. $150 is a good deal BUT only if one of the local welding supplies will exchange it. If it's a Praxair K cylinder, it was never available to be sold and you'd have to take out a lease on it anyway.

I rented (Oxy-acetylene) on a 10 year lease from 1958 to 1968. The ten years went by fast. The rental $ rate increased quite a bit in that time. So I bought the tanks. No rent to renew and I can sell the tanks if I wish. Bought the Argon/CO2. That is the best deal.

If I could not have bought my cylinders for my Oxy-Ax torch I would not have bought it 33 years ago. Leaseing does not pay if you want to keep the unit for 2 years or longer. Only if it is a temperary situation.

I recently had my accetylene tank retested and filled, don't remember what size it is but, it's large. Anyhow, the test and refill was $169. I've owned the tanks about 15 or 20 years. ohfred

I just purchased a Lincoln mig used from an individual and it was just over 1 yr old. The tank was empty and according to the chart somebody posted it's a 55cu/ft tank. The receipt showed he paid $135/tank, $12.50/maint. and $32/gas. I took the tank to get filled and it will cost just under $20 to fill with Ar/Co2. They didn't have that size tank so I left it to pick up next week filled. I believe they told me I could upgrade to an 80 cu/ft tank for $40 which I might do. Last week it cost me $17.50 to swap a 20cu/ft tank.
