A variation of the question was asked on an antique car board I frequent: Do you keep track of the cost of restoring/ refurbishing a car?"

Among those who didn't keep track, the responses were fairly evenly divided between those who didn't want to leave any incriminating evidence for SWMBO to happen across, and those who got so depressed themselves over what it was costing that they stopped keeping track.

That's like most gamblers; they don't count their losses so they don't have to admit that they lose way more than they gain.

My Dad always told us: "Count your losses and give away what you win and you won't turn into a big-time gambler."

I remember once we were invited to a neighbor's for one of their kid's birthday party. Their dad got a small stakes poker game going in the basement for the men. Dad rarely played poker, but he won almost all of the money in the game. When they went upstairs for cake & ice cream, Dad gave divided up his winnings among the kids as the party. The neighbor got mad at Dad for giving away "his money".
