Christmas gift.

My folks were at the farm today and mom started prodding about what I wanted for Christmas. I have no idea how much they are wanting to spend. I need a new fencing hammer and some staples but I don't think that's what she was getting at. LOL

I have heard guys around here talk about those cordless impact drivers. Is that something I would use? What is a good brand? What do I put on my "Christmas list"?

In a hex drive, Milwaukee 18 volt Red Lithium-Ion. They are the best!
I just bought a Hacksall. What a sweet tool! One of those never thought I would use things that I pick first now!

I just bought the M18 Milwaulkee combo kit with the impact and drill for around $200. I really like the impact for driving screws since you really do not have to push on it to keep the bit in the screw head. I think I would really like it with the square head drive screws better than philips. They seem to have enough power and are supposed to work down to 0 degrees. I think a DeWalt would be good too.

Dewalt 18v impact driver. Got mine about 18 months ago and it goes into the tool bag first. I would say 100 % most used tool I have. Change four tires in 20 minutes with the floor jack.

About the cordless impact driver, what brand of drill do you have? More important than which of the good brands you get of a given cordless tool is having them match. I worked in a shop for the Coast Guard where they had Dewalt drills, Milwalkee , Porta Cable, Ryobi and a bunch of other tools. It seemed that every cordless tool had a different battery. I'ld say that if you have a Dewalt 18v cordless drill, and you feel it's good enough, get a Dewalt 18v impact driver. Most of your major brands have good enough tools. I'ld say you should encourage your giver to match the impact to the same brand and battery size.

x2 You will never use your drill to drive a screw again!!!

If you have Milwaukee or Makita their drivers are just fine as well. I already had 18v DeWalt so I stuck with it.

I don't know about the larger models but the 1/4" Makita impact driver I bought has been bulletproof.

I am semi-retired from the sigh business and have driven and removed tens of thousands of screws with a few 9.6v cordless drills.

I looked at these when they first came out and they were over $500.00 (need at least two) and never bought them.

Now that I bought them at 1/3 that price I wish I would have bit the bullet.

They are nothing short of incredible.

Brad, hope you don't take offense. I love my 18v dewalt 1/4 inch impact so much that I even have a 1/2 inch Dewalt impact.

Mine are more than incredible. Not sure if they are bullet proof. They have never given me a reason to shoot one yet.

What exactly is semi-retired? I retired 8 years ago, but I have more to do than when I was working.

Hey George!

Semi-retired means that I am not looking for the large install jobs any more. Too expensive for truck and liability insurance.

My 9.6v Makita drills might have been bulletproof but not idiotproof. I dropped one from the bucket about 30 feet up onto the concrete sidewalk in a strip mall.

Battery and drill went in separate directions. Put 'em back together and the drill runs fine but has about a quarter inch wobble at the chuck.

I am retired from my state job and my wife and family keep me busier that when I was workin'!
