Electric current tester

I once had a tester that you placed on a wire that indicated any current flowing thru it. Does anyone know of a place to buy one? Local automotive places don't have 'em. TIA

I had a couple of them - neither worked well. When I tried to return the last one, was told they were no linger stocked. Might be better to break the wire and insert a conventional ammeter. (I assume you're measuring DC like in a automotive/tractor application.

For AC there are numerous clamp-on ammeters available on eBay, other sources, probably most home improvement stores.

you can get inductive and clamp on testers for ac and dc.. dc usually costs more.

you can also get 'live circuit' pen at hardware stores inthe electrical dept ( lowes.. etc ).. takes a battery, and if you place it next to a live 'line' wire a led lights up..e tc...

that what you talking about?

You can get DC clamp meters.. they just cost more. cheap ac clamps can be 10$.. many dc clamps are on more industrial grade meters that could be int he 150-600$ range.. though I believe craftsman 82369 may be the cheapest at 60$ IIRC.

Are you looking for an ampmeter or NCV indicator? From what you are asking either will sound right. If you mean the something that you hold near the wire and it flashes and maybe beeps if the wire is live, you are refering to NCV tester. You can get those pens for around $10 at Lowes or Home Depot, yet, in my humble opinion, those pens are not very reliable. I have NCV with my clamp meter, which is a Fieldpiece SC53. Those are far more pricey, however. If you are refering to a device that clamps over a wire and tells you how many amps are passing thru that wire, it would be an ampmeter, which should be available at an auto parts store. NCV, which is what I think you are refering to, is Non Contact Voltage.

ought one like yours from Sears.....long time ago.

Hey Bernie.

They are available from pretty much any electrical supply.

Fluke, Greenlee and Ideal are some pro brands that come to mind.

Brad

I bought one from KD tools awhile ago, cost about $5 or $6 if I remember right. It measures starter current draw or alternator output, simple to use.

Bernie, you do not state whether it is AC (like in your house) or DC (like in your car/truck). The detector will be specific to AC or DC.

Thanks for all the replies. It would be for DC. You place over the gen/alt wire to see if it's putting out current.

Hello Bernie/MA,
Is this what you are looking for?
The name of the company is Hoyt.
Go a couple different capacity in my box.
Guido.

I have found several of these little babys at the flea market. Picked up a Snapon Blue point for $3.00 about two months ago. Looked like NEW! Love those flea markets! Jeffcat
