Does anyone have an opinion on the new Windows8?
I need to up grade but am thinking perhaps stay with Windows7.

We just got a new one for my wife a couple of weeks ago. Windows 7 was on it - Windows 8 upgrade rebate was included. Computer guy said to wait awhile and let someone else get the bugs worked out of Windows 8. Just passing along his recommendation. I'm computer illiterate.

From what I have heard from smarter people than me on computers Windows 7 is good,Windows 8 stay away from.

For the record, I don't claim to be a computer expert. With that said, Windows 8 is a somewhat touchy-feely type of OS that seems to copy what is on the newest smart phones. Whatever you do, get a few hours of experience of Windows 8 on a different computer before you upgrade or buy Windows 8.

That is this weeks question on www.cnet.com . Initial impressions are that buisnesses will stay with Windows 7 and Windows XP Pro.

Just what I read on other sites, they say W8 is only an advantage on a new touch screen computer.

On an old non touch screen, mouse and keyboard computer, W8 is clunky and harder to use than W7

About three weeks ago, I bought a new computer with Windows 7 to replace my old one with XP.

I use it in a home office, and I've had so many problems trying to access and down load our company's software, I gave up and am again using my old 'puter with XP and IE8. The problems seem to involve IE9. I tried to download IE8 on the new unit and it wouldn't accept it.

However, neither IE9, Firefox, or Google Chrome will install company software to diagram houses and commercial buildings. Without that, I'm dead in the water for doing my job. I have an email in to our company's techies, and haven't heard back. The manufacturer's techies want to charge me to sort it out since it's apparently in the company software and not the computer.

I bought my wife an identical one at the same time, and she's getting along great. But, all she uses hers for is for email and to surf the 'Net, she doesn't have to use the business software I do.

I get the impression that whoever designed Windows 7 thinks everyone who owns a computer spends 95% of their time playing video games, watching movies, and listening to music. All I want is a workhorse computer that will efficiently do what I need to to do my job.

I really like Windows 7. Though I also liked XP.

Computer support guy at work and a computer sales guy told me to stay away from Windows 8 until they get the bugs worked out (there always seems to be some with new operating systerms). The computer salesman just bought himself a new computer with Windows 7 - because he does not want to switch to 8.

Jim, I am posting on a computer that is Windows 98, which is like 90 whatevers more than 8. You might think that since Windows 98 is so much higher than windows merely 8 that ir would be so much better, yet alas, it isn't.

(quoted from post at 10:14:58 11/04/12) Does anyone have an opinion on the new Windows8?
I have used Windows 8. I looks different, but works well. The first thing you'll see are live tiles on the start screen. Depending on what app the tile is for you can have information updating live: weather, stocks, email, sports, news, etc.. Click on a tile (app) to open it full screen. The tiles (apps) are run in a sandbox ("In computer security, a sandbox is a security mechanism for separating running programs." from Wikipedia) You can open a desktop screen that will look familiar with normal icons. IE 10 is the installed browser but you can add other browsers if you choose. I wish I had a touch monitor, but I just have the normal keyboard and mouse. I suggest you go to a store and play around with Win 8.

I had Windows 7 and Windows 8 User Preview dual booting until I installed a new SSD. I have backed up my ssd and have Windows 8 Pro ready to install in a day or two.

Saw a report somewhere that it was time to buy windows7 because it had been reduced due to the impending release of windows 8. I suppose it still stands.

About .com has sent me an email, item written by Tim Fisher... about Pc support.. Introducing windows 8. you may wish to check it out at the site.

Ive run Win8pro for about a week now. Like anything else it takes some getting used to. Boot times are great with solid state HD I agree that it would be better with touch screens like tablets but overall i like it. So far no compatibility problems with the programs I run, but I don't have everything loaded yet either

When I saw the "tiles" on windows 8, I thought immediately of Windows 3.

I really liked Windows 3.1

Not so much with 95, 98, or XP. I like Windows 7 okay, though. Doubt I'll upgrade.

I'm still a fan of Windows XP. I've tried 7 but just don't like it. 98 to XP was an easy step up, but I'm not going to give up something so good as XP. If you must upgrade, stay with 7. Every new OS has it's quirks, and 7 has them worked out now. I don't think 7 ever had too many terrible problems, because it had a really good trial run.(Vista)

I run XP pro on my machine for work, I also have a Linux machine and like that as well. I would say if you can, roll into Linux. Its free and its better.
