Which threading die is best??
High Carbon Steel
Carbon Steel
or what ever else there is?
Been using a Craftsman 1/2" NC hex die on cold rolled steel. It worked better than I expected but last rod threaded didn't seem to fit the nut quite right. I usually just use them as rethreading dies but it's all I had to thread the rods.
I would like to get a good one to use.

A threading die is a cutting tool. Cutting tools get dull, When they get dull, the results will be such as you described. Makes no difference what brand you get, they all get dull eventually.

A "High Speed Steel" or HSS die from a country where your wouldn't be afraid to drink the water would be your best choice.

Get yourself a good Hanson 40 piece threading set. Difference between rethreading nuts and true dies is, that the dies can be adjusted, by the screw in the die, to take more or less of a bite, and add therefore can be adjusted slightly to fit oversize stock.

Exactly!
All too many think differantly and suffer for it. Beside of honest wear certain jobs we do with taps and dies will destroy them quickly. I keep two full sets. One for junk work the the other for good work and have found over the years it is lots cheaper than one set for both.
