Prostate enlargment

Well this is the Tool Talk board so I guess I should ask here.
I am quite sure that I have an enlarged prostate. I get up 2 times per night to go, I feel the urge to go more often.
Do any of you fellas here take a drug to shrink the prostate? Are there any spices or supplements that work? Diet changes? I am not overweight and I eat good, red meat only 2 times a week at the most. No soda pop, lots of sugary fruit juice though.
I have my yearly doctor checkup next week. (I do have a very attractive female doctor) so that makes it a little better.
I am in my mid 40s now, so I guess this is part of middle age and old age.

If that attractive female doctor has long fingers she should be able to tell if it is enlarged. Welcome to middle age. That is just part of the process. In a few years you'll wish you only need to get up two times a night. Now don't you feel much better? :) TDF

octor & be darn sure that you have PSA test, too!!

have the prostate checked like the other guys said. also have a psa test done, and being in your 40's get the colonoscopy done too. cancer is nothing to fool with. i take flomax. tried the herbal tea and all that jazz, just a waste of money.

Friend of mine is 40 and self employed so he does not get a physical like he should. Says no need for it as long as he feels good. When he wrecked his knee, doctor did a full blood work-up. PSA was at 30. He had prostate removed, radiation and now just finishing chemo. I found my prostate cancer from my annual physical and caught it early. Had high dose radiation treatments only and now PSA stays around .02. And my radiation doctor is a very attractive female.

By all means, get it checked out soon, even if you are feeling great otherwise. Let the grim reaper wait many more years befor he gets you.

I have had 2 colonscopes in the last 10 years.
A couple of polyps removed, not big deal.

I have a question for you.
Can your friend still make it with his wife after having his prostate removed?
I have been told that impotentcy is the after effects of prostate removal.

I can not say it does work but was told to take cranberry pills and or drink the cranberry juice and that helps keep things working. I can say when my PSA level was up doing do brought the numbers down so must have done something good

So you are saying that cranberry juice helps in peeing? Now that is an easy fix. But...Does it reduce the size of the prostate?

t depends on how many nerves they tear up or don't........for some, things still work, for others, it works with some helper pills or shots, for others, no work. Best chance is not removal but Proton Radiation Therapy....only about 10 places in the USA do this and if cancer to too wide spread it is not always an option.

Wile E;

I don't know if it's true for everyone, but had a friend have his prostate remioved and hadn't fooled around in six or seven years. Which would your wife rather have, you or s*x? Stock up on batteries and toys.

Can not say it will reduce the size but know it sure does something to help to work as it should. What I do not know but sure is better then having them go in and cut pieces out to check you out.BTDT once and that was 10 times to many

Cranberry juice is for anybody with an urinary tract infection.
Some men with some types of prostate swelling will respond to Saw Pimento and pumpkin seed oil. They sell the prostate formulas in pharmacies and health food stores.
Always compare the amount of active ingredients per pill.

My Urologist has me on Avodart to shrink the prostrate. It took awhile to take affect, but it's working for me.

Ok.
How long did it take to start working?
How much did you prostate shrink? In real terms, not "I only get up once in the night to pee"

Is the medication expensive? Can you still be active with your wife with no issues?

Thanks in advance.

Could take 90 days to work; shrank enough to speed flow. Side benefit is that it is also now known to reduce risk of bladder cancer.

It is expensive on my insurance policy; name brand with no generic (yet) so I pay maximum co-pay.

Drawback is that it kills your nightime activity, but we're in our upper 70's so we expected that.

As far as I know, it is the only drug in the market that does a reasonable job on the prostrate. I see lots of "snake oil" remedies in ads; my urologist says none of them work.

Your results may vary.

Yes I read that on the Avodart info. decreased Libido It is called. Well.......That would be bad cause I didnt marry my wife for her cooking skills. I wouldnt want to have to take Viagra too.

So I may try the cranberry juice like Old said. Also I have read that exercise is good too.

This is really not something you should be fooling around with. GO TO THE URANOLIGIST and get it checked.

Problem with listening to folks who HAD (Emphasis on HAD) a friend is that it's can RUIN YOUR health.

PLEASE consult the doctor and at your age, get a PSA test, if only for a marker.

Whatever you do, don't wait til nothing can be done. Modern medicine is terrific.

Why are you asking us. If you have a good looking female doc. Go in and stall as much as you can. Ask all the questions you can think of.

(quoted from post at 20:04:45 10/30/12) Heard tht a recent exam will exagerate the PSA.

D.

Heard from an intelligent man that had undergone the removal.
oc said that recent s*x, riding bicycle, or bouncing around on the tractor can result in enlargement AND elevate your PSA. So avoid such for a couple days before testing.

Had the same problem starting in my mid 40"s. I found out saw palmetto supplements helped shrink the prostate. The condition is BPH. (Benign prostate hypoplasty) Another inexpensive drug you can get prescribed is Terazosin, it works also.

Wile E - you should get after this problem before it gets you. It might be something minor, but you need to know that.

You mentioned night activity with your wife. A uroligist will tell you that if you can get it up now, you can probably get it up after prostate removal. If it doesn't work right now, it certainly won't be better afterwards. Talk to your uroligist - ask him about nerve sparing surgery - make your concerns known to him. I had my prostate removed last year on August 29, and on October 12 we tried it out. It worked. Mind you - it don't pop right up like it did before removal, but it works - without Viagra. And it's working better as time goes on. I hope I haven't offended anyone, but I wanted you to know your nightlife is not necessarily over. And of course I hope that he can fix you up with medicine and no surgery.

My uroligist told me that the side effects of radiation are worse than radical removal of the prostate, sexually speaking.

Also - be aware that you can have a prostate biopsy under anesthetic. I recommend the anesthetic. Some folks almost seem to enjoy a biopsy (they imply), but it was very unpleasant for me.

I hope you get good news when you visit your doctor, and I hope you don't need prostate removal.

Paul

May not be that at all. That wasn't my problem. My problem was that I came down with diabetes about 3 years ago.

A whole of things came with that. Thirsty a lot, loss of sight, urine smelled sweet as I relieved myself just about every hour, day or night, and when it came time to go, go meant right this second. Lot of sleepless nights waking up every single hour and having to drain bladder. Lot of things got whacked out, and none was prostate. Took medication for about a year, and just quit. Have been managing it ever since with diet. Would do much better if lost some poundage too. Even now, I usually wake up once a night and have to go, but not hourly like I did for awhile.

Go see a doctor is your best bet, and good luck. In any event, don't mess with it. Go see a doctor and get it fixed up before you can't.

"My uroligist told me that the side effects of radiation are worse than radical removal of the prostate, sexually speaking. "
Here, we have a classic example of a doctor promoting his pocket book and a consumer not taking the time to become fully informed.
That is so wrong & enough research will confirm it.

I will be 60 in a month. A few years ago had a total prostatectomy due to higher PSA and eventual results of a biopsy. All my later check ups have been fine-no cancer. I never did back my nnalert function. I think that the majority of guys who have either the radiation or regular surgery suffer from ED afterwards. I tried the vacuum pump thing but that is a torture device if there ever was one. I had the implants put in about 2 years ago and it has given me back my life. They are fantastic. My wife and I are so happy with them, that I am now a patient advocate for the company that makes them. About once a month I stand up in front of a group of 100 to 200 strangers and tell my story. (Google AMS 700.) Any of you are free to email me if you want to know more. You do not have to suffer with ED after this surgery.

I guess I need to tell you a little more of what the urologist and I discussed - we were on the topic of nerve sparing surgery, and he mentioned that radiation hardens the prostate and the surrounding nerves, making nerve sparing virtually impossible if the prostate needs removal in the future. If you're truly interested in nerve sparing, you need to discuss this with the urologist.

As far as being fully informed - I don't get my medical advice from a tool forum.

Thanks for all the comments.
My dad is now 72 and he had his prostate removed 5 years ago now, he said that he cannot get it up anymore. Well.....It is very important to me that all my equipment work. (I didnt marry my wife for her cooking skills)
After I meet with my doctor I want a PSA test. I will buy cranberry juice and saw palmetto to see if this works to shrink the prostate. I am all for the natural way to do it instead of drugs.

I was getting up 4/5 times a night. psa got up to 14.After a bi-op I was told I had an enlarge prostate I did not have cancer.
Dr, ordered a TURP one day hospital sstay.

I now feel great. Do not get up at all at night.Equiptment works even better, though
I now shoot blanks...but thats ok

My doctor told me to cut down on cafine, and warned me against using Red Bull type drinks. He said he'd found 30 year olds with postrates worse then most 70 year olds from drinking the Red Bull drinks.

I now start the morning with a mug of hot water before having any coffee, it helps. I do notice when I drink sugared drinks and those flavored drink mixes, that I have to take more breaks compared to drinking plain water.

Does having more salt actually increase the Prostate? I thought it had to do with blood pressure. I do have a salty diet, canned chicken, campbells soup too. I will have to cut down on this and see if this works.

Got a DOT physical every two years for about 20years including finger wave for prostate check and passed with no problem. At 55 I got a PSA test and discovered cancer. urologist asked what he should do if the cancer was spread to the point that he may have to take out the 'important' nerves. Wife and I agreed to get rid of cancer no matter what it entailed. Haven't got it up since and have worn a diaper now for about 15 years but still around to see grand kiids growing up! No regrets here.EGBinOR
