Converting overhead fuel barrel to pump style

Has anyone converted an overhead fuel barrel to a pump setup? I would guess you need to weld feet on it and cut a hole in the top for the pump. Is there anything else to the job?
How do you cut and weld on the tank?

I was given these two overheads today. Don't be confused, there are two separtate setups pictured.

You could avoid welding on the tank by making the stands shorter. The fill cap should screw off. Install your pump there. Welding on tanks is risky business.

I agree with Jim. Welding isn't wise. Most fuel barrels have two 2" bungs on the top unless it's a real old one. If there is only one bung the pump will have to be lifted out for filling which is a little unhandy. I suppose you could put a tee on the fill bung, if there's only one, with a street el sticking out the side. Pump goes in from the top and you fill through the street el. It's not real conventional and you might have to get a longer suction pipe but you won't blow yourself up that way. Jim

Seen different ways to do what your planning, first you need to make sure you have no leaks in tanks. I made a fitting to pressurize tank to no more than 3 psi for 300 gal and 5psi for 500 gal. No since doing anything till you know tanks are good. As far as pumps I have seen them plumded into bottom bunge on tank, then braced with strap to top bunge as all you need to do is support pump. I would just shorten stands to your desired height. I have a few of my fuel customers that have done this, and havent had any problems. One of my customers put a post in the ground between his tanks and secured both pumps to it, worked out real nice that way.
