I am looking for a used Plasma cutter-- does anyone have a preference on Brands?? I don"t have any idea of which might be best.
I had a Hyper therm borrowed but he needed it back. And I need to buy one anyway.
Thanks for some suggestions

The most important thing with plasma cutters is that you should get twice the capacity you need. They will do what they say, but at anything close to max they are slow and messy. Mine says it will pierce 1 1/4" and cut 1" steel and I tried it to see if it would. It did, but the gas torch was much better. Mine will do 3/4" steel and 1/2" aluminum fairly well. Make sure that you get a brand that consumables will be available for too. Also tips and cones are expensive. Mine is a thermal Dynamics and is about 15 years old and have had no problems with it.

Hypertherm makes great machines.

Whatever you do buy, you need dry, dry air or the nozzles and other consumables wont last long and are expensive.

FWIW, Hypertherms Jim Colt is a straight shooter over on the weldingweb site, there is a separate section for tools and equipment.

I generally don't read to many threads about plasma cutters. So I haven't been paying too much attention to what is the best out there now. Last I heard was Hypertherm and Thermal Dynamics were still on top. I've had my Hypertherm 1250 for about 12-years now, not one single problem.

I have had an Everlast Power Plasma 50 for a couple years now and it has been fantastic for me. I don't use it every single day but it gets used a lot and I wouldn't be afraid to use it every day. It's cheap and cuts impressive. Easy to find common every day consumables too. I don't know how thick your cutting, this machine is not an 80 or 90 amp machine but is way more than a sheetmetal machine. I cut a piece of 1" square stock off when I got it and it shocked me at that. Lots of bad goes around about that company, I don't know, I have other things from them and it all works good, it's just the customer service end can be a pain to deal with.

cd1 are you a member of Tractorbynet.com? If not join! In the welding section there is an Everlast sponsor there named Mark Lugo. Mark will take good care of you, and a very knowledgeable weldor to boot.

What type of cutting will you be doing? Older plasma machines use a high frequency for the pilot arc which can interfere with some electronic equipment and/or pacemakers. There's several good plasma torches but you need something that's easy to get parts and consumables for and a water filter is a must. If you come across a used machine, post it here and check the web for reviews before purchasing it.
