DR Woodsplitter

Anybody have or use a DR Woodsplitter with the flywheels and rack and pinion? How can the rack engage the constant spinning pinion without grinding gears? What happens when the piece of wood is too tough for it to split?

My SIL has a Super Splitter same principal Oldest Grandson says it's a lot faster and if it hits a tough piece of wood it just backs off and you hit it again. If the piece is to tough you use it in the outside fireplace. It doesn't seem to grind the gears.

I had a Super Splitter for years. I really liked it. It was a lot faster than a hydraulic splitter. It did not grind the gears. If you hit a piece that was too hard to split the first hit the rack will return. Let the flywheels speed back up and hit it again. You did not get too many you could not split.

They seem to work OK and some who own them realy like them, some dont. My thinking is it depends on what you generaly use for firewood. I got the SpeeCo version from TSC and tried out out on the fence row Elm we usualy burn and it was less than satifactory in a big way so I returned it. Turns out that was a good decission as there has been major problems with that brand, I am pretty sure SpeeCo has withdrawn from selling them. From what I heave read you best stay with the original one the Super Split.

I would buy the Super Split. He let the pattent expire , but it is really a clone of his idea. I have heard the flywheels on the DR are Chineese
