Farmall 656 clutch adjustment problem

Have a 656 diesel that ran out of clutch adjustment so I replaced the clutch, pressure plate and release bearing, old plates did not appear to be really worn out, and am now having the problem of not being able to have the 1 3/4" freepedal and still be able to shift gears. If I adjust it so I can shift , I have NO freepedal. These new components act just about like the old ( not worn out ones) did. Parts appeared to be identical, were bought as a set from a reputable parts place. I am baffled. A little help, please. Thanks
 
Post this on the Farmall board- you'll get more response and probably ideas from a few folks that have done more than a few of these.
 
There is more to it then just adjusting the free travel. First ya get the free travel set then you adjust the Linkage on the T/A If the T/A adjustments are not correct then you will not be able to get it out of gear as you are hanging on the sprag of the T/A and doing damage to the T/A . If you do not have a book to follow then your in trouble . For me to tell you how on here would take a lot of typen . As the 656-686 sets different . Get a book .
 
I have the 656 Dad bought new, the clutch adjustment is quite a process, get a manual, follow the steps and take your time to get it all correct. I don't think it can be explained very well here, can't beat a manual with pictures etc..
 
Don't worry about going to the IH board, the tractor vet is the guy you wanted to talk to and he answered here.
 
I appreciate the advice. I have both the operator's manual and the I T manual and followed the directions for r and r and adjustment of both primary and T A adjustments meticulously before I contacted YT. With 1/8th inch clearance between the clutch levers or fingers and the release bearing, the free play is 2 1/2 inches. Floor plate is in home position with all 4 spool spacers in place, clutch pedal, rod , adjuster yoke and pins are original and undamaged. What controls the home position of release bearing on the cast housing that holds it. If this release bearing is not in the proper place, that 1/8" clearance is out of sinc with the travel of clutch throw distance. It appears to be identical to the position of the other diesel 656 that I own. Would it be possible to put the clutch disc on backwards between the pressure plate and the engine? I can't clearly remember which way it faced. But even if it were wrong , that wouldn't explain why I was having trouble with the first unwornout clutch. Still baffled.
 
Will the clutch disc goes in with the damper springs to the rear . Did you remove the shipping bolts or nuts under the release levers on the pressure plate . Di you get the throw out bearing seated on the collar , With out running out to the truck and getting my books off the top of my head i do not remember what the clutch free travel is . But should be nomore then 7/8- 1 inch I THINK and you set this first then you remove springs and set the T/A clutch free travel next ands sometimes due to ware ya have to go by feel . then you adjust the T/A lever 656-686 can be a pain even for me .Don't know where you live but if you were close i would be happy to lend a hand .
 
Did not find ANY shipping bolts or nuts under release levers. I didn't see any positive stop to seat release bearing against but as stated before it seems to be in the same home position as my other 656 diesel. I T manual says 1 3/4 " free pedal for Farmall, That's what I'm trying to use but set at that distance there is NO clearance between bearing and fingers. I am located 50 miles north of Duluth Minnesota. Still baffled.
 
Ah yea , that is a weeeeeee bit far for a service call . Even if i was out at my friends in Mo. it would be a hike . and at current fuel prices . The mileage would kill ya . the hourly rate is good . As i am in North East Ohio. Your best bet would be find a I H guru in your area and have him look at it. I don't mind a little drive even up to five hours one way .
