Dewalt 18v batteries

Can they be refurbished when they only hold a charge for about 3 minutes? It seems like there was some discussion on this a while ago. Thanks.

There was some talk about freezing them , I tried it , left them in the freezer for three days , and recharged 'em ....no dice.......

Hi, I'm getting two rebuilt right now, Bemidji mn, Batteries Wholsale Inc. ??. $49.00 ea chaepest I found.
Dan

interstate battery distributers can send them to their rebuild shop, takes 3 to 7 days. no shipping and they work well when you get them back.

Sam Wigeon,
I've tried freezing them, zapping them with a mig welder. The best thing you can do with a dewalt, or for that matter, any Ni-cd battery is get rid of them. I'm not a fan of the expensive Li-ion batteries either. Very expensive and don't hold half the charge of a Ni-Metal, NiMH. I have two Li-ion batteries and 2 Ni-metal. A 4 year old Ni-metal will out last 2 Li-ion. BTW, the price of Ni-metals on ebay are close to the price of an old Ni-cd. You need the newer charger, it will charge both Li-ions and Ni-Mh.

People are so funny!
Freezing ni-cads to refurbish them is like freezing burnt biscuits for better results.

go to Harbor Freight, buy their 18V batt pack at ~$16, open it swap then into your pack, a little soldering is needed, but alot less work than doing cell by cell and cheaper.
But you will have a 1.5AH pack instead of a 2.X AH, for the price I think it is worth it.

Sam,
Ebay has the best batteries you can buy,
18V 3000mAh Ni-Mh Battery for DEWALT DC9096 DE9098 DCD970KL DC987KA DC989KA
Seller : masione_outlet ( 464) 100% Positive feedback

for $45.99 and free shipping. I won't buy anything else. They will last for years. You will need to buy a yellow dewalt charger. Go ahead and buy the dewalt radio, it has a built in charger.

I started using dewalt 18v tools in 1998. I love dewalt tools, hate dewalt XRP Ni-cd.

You can thank me later.
George

Hello George Marsh,
We have three of these, vintage mid 90's.
You are right, they are the battery to get.
Those racing pack though were a bit more then $45, and there are only six in a pack!

Guido,
I think, may be wrong, hybrid cars use NiMh batteries. There were issues with Li-ion. Not sure if they got that fixed.

Only problem I have with the battery is that it is so powerful if I use it on sawsall, it will shake the internal connections between cells loose. Had to fix a few times.

For the money you can't beat it. Had mine for 4 years and still going strong.

All I have to say is try one and you will never go back.

George

Hello George Marsh,
I think you are right about the NiMh for the hybrid cars. Just a bunch of D size crammed in there. You may want to go to a hobby shop, and see if they have better cell connectors. That was one area that many manufactures were trying to fix. Even had silver bars at one time. I don't know what is available now, have not races for many years.
Guido.
