Not sure if this is the right message board, but just wondering if anyone else has set up a stock tank to be gravity fed from a separate collection tank. I'd like to start collecting rain water from at least one barn into a poly tank, then hook it to a tank/float setup. My biggest question is what float is going to give me flow with a small amount of head pressure. Hudson valves list needing 8 psi minimum. Jobe ROJO valves say they work from 0 psi up. Tank would be in the 500-600 gallon range, but it would be mounted only about 4-5 feet off the ground near watering tank. |

| | I am not sure how much flow would be needed but I think I would use a toilet tank valve. They are cheap, dependable and easy to adjust. Believe it or not, they use them to keep the level right on the devices that fill wine bottles at the smaller wine makers. |

| | The cheap floats sold at the farm supply store work for me, I have a cistern with low head pressure. Dad would srill the small float hole out a bit bigger when he had 60 cattle, I just use as is for the 25-30 head. With lower pressure, the hole can be bigger and the float will handle it. --->PAul |

| My stock tank float has a chunk of styrofoam in it that rises up and closes off a little hole to shut off the flow. Costs about $15 and the last one is at least 10 years old. It's totally controlled by the water level and has nothing to do with pressure. |

| Hook it up to your stock tank, with a straight valve, and crack the valve to let just a trickle of water out, to fill your stock tank. Adjust, to keep the tank full, but not overflowing. I do this with my herd, about a 1/8" trickle, will keep 6 cows wet, year round, and won't freeze, in all but the coldest weather, here, in MD. |

| Sounds like you are out of luck with the Hudson at 4 to 5 feet head pressure. For 8PSI, you need about 18 feet. |
