looking at getting a cordless grease gun, looking at lincoln, wonder if anyone has the 18 volt and if they are happy with it and if its worth the extra money to go to an 18 volt verses the 14.4 volt...and input welcome, or if there is a different brand i should look into?

thanks

The semi trucks we bought last year where owned by a guy with a battery powered grease gun. I got to replace just about everything that had a seal in it. He blew out all of them. He would just grease away until he saw grease. The brake cam arm bearing have a little o-ring to help keep the water out of them. There where four of them on the trailers that where ruined because of over greasing. So be gentle with the gun. You don't have any "feel" when things are full like you would with a manual grease gun.

For effective lubrication you want a lot of flow and pressure to force the grease into the entire part to be lubricated, especially important on universal joints, drive shaft slip yokes, kingpins and shackles.

Met a friend at Rural King this morning and he discussed getting a cordless grease gun. He mentioned the problem with most cordless tools is the battery goes bad and they are expensive to replace. He wished that dewalt made an 18v gun, because all his cordless tools are dewalts.

Perhaps if you buy a cordless gun, you may want to get one that uses the same batteries you have in your other cordless tools. Don't know if that is possible.

Does anyone know if dewalt makes one?

George

I have an inexpensive air one from Fleet Farm, works
great, but only on the end of the air hose! I have a
disc that needs a lot of grease and I needed three
hands to grease it with a hand pump one. If I needed
one I would buy a cordless, but I can't justify it,
and I suppose you need a new battery every 5 years
like anything else cordless.

We had one of the Lincoln 18v when I was shop foreman at large fleet trucking company. They were good. Never gave any trouble. I always preferred a pistol grip manual grease gun though. Back when trucks had probably 50-60 fittings I always enjoyed showing the new guys, right out of school, how to PM a truck with the manual gun. After about thirty minutes of squeezing on the pistol grip their hands would be tired and achey. They would comment on it so then I would tell them about the battery operated gun. Some of them laughed. Some got mad. Myself and the others always laughed.

I've owned a Lincoln 14.4volt and recently switched to the Lincoln
18volt. The motor on the 14.4 volt finally died after 5-6 years of
use. Both grease guns work really well. I upgraded to the 18volt
because it develops a higher pressure and my machines have some
zerks that don't like to take grease. I would recommend having two
batteries. Overall I think the Lincoln guns are relatively durable.

Had the Lincoln for 6 years now. Dropped it and broke one of the plastic parts, 2 days later was up and running again.I Go through about 40 tubes of grease a year and love it! Batteries seem to last pretty well. I have 2 so one is always on charge

Never owned a grease gun with a cord in reply to johndeeregreg, 08-14-2012 21:47:16
Gee, Ive owned Grease Guns for fifty years and never had any with any sort of cord. I guess all mine are cordless lol lol

Seriously, I'm a fan of the 18 volt. I own some DeWalt 18 volt "Cordless" tools and have been well satisfied.

Best wishes, John T

JohnT,
After reading this post a second time, I went out and greased my backhoe, has about 40 places to grease. I use a one handed gun, just squeeze the handle. Leaves my other hand free to hold the hose. I tried greasing one place that didn't want to take grease. That's when I wondered if I would even know that there was a problem with a cordless gun.

I have a pheumatic gun and don't really like it. Not sure if the gun wouldn't make a noise and not deliver the grease.

I'm with you, do it by hand. At least you get a feel and know it it's taking grease.

Same here George. I prefer a pistol-grip grease gun with a flex hose.. I flat out do not like any electric or pneumatic powered grease guns.... not adequate feel...

Me too, I have about every 18v dewalt tool made, but dislike their ni-cds. Their xrp batteries won't last more than 2. I use my tools every day. Even have a 12v charger in my truck. I have 2 lithium and 2 nickel metal batteries. One nickel will out preform 2 lithium batteries.
Nickel batteries, on ebay, are about the same price as xrp's.
