AIS motor could be the problem as Brian stated, but as Ryan stated correct voltage to the AIS motor is necessary for it to operate properly. Have your battery load tested and if it's good clean the AIS pintle and throttle body. If that doesn't correct the problem you may need to replace the AIS motor. The only way to properly clean them is to remove the AIS motor from the throttle body. Clean the throttle body with carb cleaner spray and an old toothbrush until it looks new on the inside. This includes the throttle plate. Hope this helps. Gerard

I just went through the same thing on a 4.3 v6 . After many months of it running great above idle, but wanting to die if you took your foot off the accelerator, I pulled the distributor cap. Was amazed that the thing would run at all. The top of the distributor had gone to pieces, multiple pieces, laying all around the inside. After installing a new one, I felt like I was driving a new vehicle.Just something to check, only takes a couple of minutes and you may be surprised.

I would guess it is the idle motor giving problems. I have a 98 that gives me grief. It does not drop a code to steer me any place in particular. Of course the idle motor is interconnected with a couple other sensors like the throttle position sensor for one. I ran a jury rigged idle motor for some time so the plunger could not move and I adjusted the idle speed with washers under plunger. Right now I have the new unit on there and it has been working ok but I would not bet it will continue. That brings me to another happening. With all that talk about Toyota's running away a few years ago. Well, one day, I drove out to the shop where I was working on a customer's tractor. Jumped out of truck, went in to open shop door, stood in there a few seconds talking to owner, engine takes off like a screaming demon, I ran to truck but it shut down t normal before I got there. It never happened again but it made a believer out of me that these things can happen. Of course, I believe I could have shut this one down with the key if need be.

Check your battery connections and have the battery tested. Dakotas (I have a 99) will not idle if the battery is bad. The way it was explained to me is that there is no connection directly from the alternator to the coil, it must go through the battery. If the battery is low there isn't enough voltage to send power to the coil.

you ought to be able to read some of your codes turn the key from the off position to the on position without cranking the engin over three times then watch your check engine light it will blink out your codes you have to turn the key sort of slowly a second or so ,but not too slow, might have to do it a few times to make it work.Have a pen and paper to write the numbers dowm, you can look up the codes at several sghts a good one is allpar is a god one when it flashes a five - five your done with the codes good luck

It's an 02 it will have a digital odometer and give a 5-digit code starting with a letter and then 4 numbers.

Don't try to adjust your timing by turning the distributor either, on a magnum engine. The timing is set by the computer reading the crank sensor.
