old bachtold mower

I have an old Bachtold mower but the decals are worn
off. You can still read Bradley on the engine
recoil cover. It has a metal fuel tank in front of
the engine and the carb is on the back of the moter.
If any one can help me id this machine I would be grateful. The recoil needs to be rebuilt and I have
no idea what to look for.

In my Vintage garden tractor book there is a picture of a Advertisement from 1951. It shows a mower with high wheels and it looks like a cycle bar mower on it. It also shows a 20" saw blade that you can change position of blade to cut horizonal or verticle. It states you can cut down a 15" diameter tree and then change it to cut fiire wood. It also shows a cultivator for it. They were manufactured by Bachold Brothers,Inc. of Forrest Ill. (no information on the engine. Hope this helps.

Post a photo and I can ID the engine. I've got a few old ads for Bachtold mowers from 1948 to 1951. They show a 1 1/2 horse model and a 3 horse model. Also a list of attachments including a saw, air compressor, cultivator, snow blade, wire winder, etc. No info on the engine make. Must the company's address in Forest, Illinois.

I never heard of a Bradley engine. Sounds like maybe somebody took an old Briggs engine off a David Bradley two-wheel tractor and stuck it on the Bachtold?

Wonder what you really have, never heard of a Bradley engine. All the old Bachtold mowers I've seen had Wisconsins on them, oldest one I have has the belt drive on the drive wheel.

It would be a guess without any pics, but it's liable to be a David Bradley engine, which was a Montgomery-Ward version built by Briggs and Stratton.

FWIW, A place worked sold Bachtolds till at least 1997, They had B&S 8hp on them. I think they are still in business.

Wards didn't use David Bradely that ever heard of . David Bradley was Sears-Roebuck.

Montgomery Wards sold the Hoe-Trac and Plow-Trac line. Came with Wisconsin AB 3 horse engines or 1 1/2 horse Briggs.

The newers Bachtolds made from the 1960s to recent came with Briggs & Stratton, Wisconsin, and Kohler engines.

May have been Sears, but at any rate, sounds like a second engine, especially without pics--

Thanks for all the responses. I know everyone loves a good puzzle just like me. I have attached some photos for everyone to look at. As you will see in the photos the recoil does not work and that is what I am trying to fix. I am also interested in eventually selling this machine if any one is interested.

That looks like a Briggs & Stratten engine, to
me. It should have a model and series number
stamped into the shroud. With that number, any
small engine shop can get you a rewind starter.
They are in NAPA Auto parts, "Outdoor Power
Equipment" catalog, or, there should be plenty in
the junkyards!@

Again thanks for all the replies to this post. I want to add a couple things and get some more opinions. I should have realized that this engine may not have been original because the lever that engages the blade also hits the fuel tank but maybe this was normal for Bachtold. When I started looking closer I also noticed an extra hole on the frame mount that could suggest that a narrower mounting engine was installed leaving this empty hole where the old engine mounted. I am looking for some opinions.

Any small engine shop should be able to repair that recoil in a matter of minutes. It is a Briggs engine...here's your engine on a early 60's David Bradley:

Edit: Oops, didn't read the other thread. I see someone else posted the same photo earlier today.
