This is on a truck, a western pro-plow, electric over hydraulics, plow goes up, but not down, side to side works, then it does"nt work, and the plow goes down, but goes up slowly, works a couple of times, then quits working, and won"t go down again. What"s wrong with this?

Give Western a call. They sure do know their product. They can help with the correct information. Can supply you the phone # if you need it.

got to westernplow.com you can down load the repair manual there it should have a trouble shooting section if I remember right.

If you get a manual, it will list out things to try. Here's what I've learned: the electrical connection between plow and truck with many pins needs to be well cleaned and greased. Carefully have someone wiggle this connection to see if anything helps--and clean it well. Also check all connections behind the cover on the pump housing. This is the quick. Longer is take a test light and make sure you have the proper juice coming out of the truck plug. Also, I've replaced or cleaned crud out of the coils. I've got a list of the other things we do after every two snows to keep ours going if you're interested. Unfortunately I've been through every part of one of those-but that's part of it. Sometimes at 2 AM in the middle of a parking lot!!

My sister has a smaller 6- 1/2' western plow, same thing is wrong. I think the valve/needle valve that controls the fluid to release has some rust or is sticking in the bore causing it not to release. Figure a spring/summer project to tear it apart and put a kit in it. I can't even budge it with a ratchet strap to get it to drop, up and sideways works great, just not the down.

Last year I had similar problems with my Meyers plow on a Blazer. Finally determined it was H2O in the system. Every time I plowed in cold weather I had to spend some time with the plow control in front of a heater. This year as suggested in the manual I flushed the entire system with Kerosene and have not had a problem. Suggest you warm up the entire pump unit before you make any major changes.

Some times ice can get under the leaver where the cable hooks up on the old plows.

Your down solenoid is either shorted outor lost power to that solenoid.but i think that solenoid is bad, take off and clean with some fine sandpaper.

I have a Meyer 8 ft that has had similar problems.

Change the fluid a couple times, it should help. If not, it is a solenoid.

I haven't looked at Western's website, but you can download a free manual from Meyer. If you just want the troubleshooting part, just print those pages.

It will walk you thru every possible problem with Yes/No flow chart.

But I think the fluid is the issue, operator manual says should be changed before the season starts. The fluid gets warm during use and will draw moisture, so am getting ready to change mine again soon.

DON'T flush with kerosene. Meyer manual advises against it, because it can soften the seals.

Also, use ONLY snow plow oil. Meyer, Western, or an auto parts store true snow plow oil will all work. NO!! transmission fluid, jack oil, hytran type fluid, motor oil, or any other substitute. DOUG

I have worked on several plow units and in each case where the controls got slow or failed the cause ended up being improper fluid.

Atf is the most common culprit. I works fine but it loves to absorb water. In a transmission the water evaporates but in a plow pump it never gets hot enough.

The fix is to get the atf ALL out. You can pump in new fluid but it is quite expensive...Compressed air will help.
