Well point gauze size?

Putting in a 2" sprinkler well this year. I have a high water table here with springs all over the property and will be driving a point down which should be less than 20 feet to the tip. Soil is mostly sandy with layers of fine gravel.

Local hardware guys all have 80 gauze points and as far as I can determine that may be a little too fine and restrictive. 60 seems to be a better choice based on what I have read but I am having trouble finding one. Now part of me is saying "if everyone has 80 there must be a good reason".

Thoughts?

I vote for plastic. It's 100 times easier to to wash a plastic point than drive a steel one. Cheaper too, a lot cheaper. 1.25" metal points are at least $50 arent they? I saw one at HD for $85 the other day! I can get plastic for $10 at local hardware, think I paid $17 for the 2". That said, I checked a plastic point I have here and it has .008" slots. I've got yellow sand.

I washed a 2" point down for a sprinkler pump last year. I glued 3' points together to make a 5.5' point. 2.5 HP pump I can pull 33 gal/min.

Not sure how much water you want or what you are planning on pumping with, but you can get a lot of water through a plastic point. We usually wash the 1.25" points in with a 3HP trash pump. After the point is in we'll hook the trash pump to the point and pump for a while to get most of the fine silt and such cleaned out. Usually can pull at least 15 gal/min through an 1.25. My $.02. Thanks Jeff. I considered trying to wash the point down as well. Last house that I put a well in had a 2" plastic point (put in by a well driller) with a 1.5HP pump and I got 40 gal/min. If I can get 30~40 gal. I will be really happy here.

Current system is on city water and the flow is low. With a pump I think I can cut the amount of zones down.

How do you "wash: a point in. I'm going to put it a garden irrigation well too.

I believe it is when you drive a well point down thru the ground and have water running thru it at the same time. The water pushes the loose ground up around the pipe as you're driving it down. A water hose or water source has to be connected at the top where you're driving it.

You can dig a small hole and fill it with water and push an eight foot ground rod in by hand. The water helps as a lubricant.
