O.T. Introducing new dog to old dogs

Way off topic here, but we had an abondoned dachshund show up out at our place in the country. She had a hole in her side, and a couple of nasty cuts, but otherwise seemed okay, so we fed her, and took her home with us. We posted signs on the county road, and even called the local vet, but no one has claimed her (I wasn"t too surprised).
There"s one problem though----the dachshund is really scared to go outside where we haev the 2 labs. They aren"t aggressive, but the dachshund snaps, growls, and doesn"t want to be "friends".
Any suggestions on how to introduce dogs to each other? These are all females, if that matters.
Thanks in advance!

Sounds like she got tore up by some bigger dogs and she is probably scared to death of large dogs. Need to take time and let her gradually become aquainted with the large dogs if she sees that they are not a threat she will likely start coming around. If not then you have to make a decision, her or your other dogs.

Hi 1945 A,

I wish I had some information for you about the problem, but I don't. I do have a suggestion, though. There are many animal rescue sites online, so many in fact that you could probably choose among those which focused on rescuing dachshunds. Introducing frightened, injured, disoriented newcomers to the animals already there has to be one of their most common problems. I'm sure you could get excellent information based on extensive personal experience from as many of those people as you cared to contact. I've never met a person working in animal rescue who wasn't helpful and caring. After all, it isn't something anyone gets involved in for the money or the glamour.

Good for you for taking in that poor, mistreated animal. My wife and I have three rescued dogs and we couldn't be happier to have them with us.

Good luck and all the best to you,

Stan

What do you expect from a bunch of females ?

I had 1 dog then got another and tried to graudually introduce them. Finally said to heck with it and let them together and got out of the way and they soon sorted it out on their own.

Put the dachs in a pet carrier and take her out. Let them smell each other. Introduce her slowly, maybe carry her out a couple times a day for a few days. Once the labs know her and she knows them, they should get along good.

How about keeping her as an "inside dog?" With her short smooth coat, she shouldn"t be outside in the cold anyway.

Dachshunds are great dogs, btw.

Just be polite and very respectfull. I'd say,"Speaker Pelosi, this is nnalert, nnalert this is speaker Nancy Pelosi."

Talk about a gluttin for punishment................. 2 female dogs and you picked up a third that just happened to be a wiener dog..... Snooty little dogs, she probably called them black B!tches or something. They should work it out OK. If it was me, I'd put a muzzle on the three of them (so they couldn't hurt each other) and put them in a room together with a couple of balls or toys and leave them until they accept each other.

Good Luck.

Dave

Been my experience that no dog is scared of another dog as far as physical injury, it is usally all about food and domination of the food, she probably had few and far between meals prior to you picking her up. I would go outside with her at mealtime and let her see that the bigger dogs are not going to take her food.

If you have a Vet or animal shelter nearby, have your new Dash.... scanned. It could be just lost and not thrown away by an A-hole owner. Have found the owners to two dogs around here, through that method, then again I live in a big city and most pets are micro-chipped here.

Gradual introduction is the key as others have suggested. Have taken neighbour's dogs to obedience classes and everything is a huge barking contest the first time, to establish the "pecking order". They settle down on the second and third meetings and then they are all friends.

Good luck and enjoy your new friend!

We are a foster home for German Shepherd Rescue.

Gradual introduction is the word. Also you need to make the new thing an old boring thing. Crate the doxie inside and let everyone meet with the wire between them. Pretty soon everyone has seen each other enough it's old news.

But you have one strike against you you can't ever resolve. 3 females in one house is guaranteed trouble. Always always always, as many boys as you want and one female. The guys will sort out the hierarchy, the female will run the pack and the boys always kowtow to her.
